When the Jack Benny radio show was sponsored by Jello (it was called The Jello Program starring Jack Benny ) he’d start by saying “Jello, everyone.” When they sponsored Lucille Ball’s My Favourite Husband she’d do the ads and use the same greeting.
As a kid athlete I was of a generation where jello and oranges were the go to snack food to keep us energized for the next event without weighing us down. Have to say – there is a certain nostalgia that draws me back to it from time to time. I feel for you Spud.
The perspective in this strip today is fantastic: the big lobster buoy and the gull in the foreground and the teeny little boats in the distance, and the wavelets that get closer and closer together as the big waves recede into the background.
Looks like the Seagulls have to watch where they land with all the garbage in the sea. Unless those objects are meant to be buoys attached to fishing nets?

Someone will ask Spud why he’s channeling Jack Benny.

Two psychiatrists pass one another in the clinic hallway
One says, Hello.
The other thinks, I wonder what he meant by that?
Spud passes the cafeteria lunch lady in the school hallway.
He says, Jello.
She thinks, But what flavor?

In Swahili, you’d be greeting people with “Jambo”!

I don’t think it rhymes with anything important but I’m going to try: “Pudding” as a greeting…

One of Penn & Teller’s pranks when on the road, dining in a diner, was to buy Jell-O for a stranger. A good icebreaker to start a conversation.
