When i call a company and complain about something the customer service person automatically says “I’m very sorry about that” or “sorry for the inconvenience.” It doesn’t help. They’re trained to say that.
I developed telephonophobia after being a customer service representative for several years. My first thought when someone called would be, “how can I end this call”? It can be quite debilitating.
I have tons of respect for people who do those jobs. I usually say something like, “I’m sorry you get treated the way you do.” Then I hear a big sigh and a thanks.
I’m not sure when apologies became a substitute for service. Clearly, some of these help lines have that same “five word vocabulary”. “We’re always looking for new ways to serve you by apologizing for the inconvenience.” – doesn’t really cut it. Especially now that it may soon be an AI who cannot care.

Zombies; both the living and the undead versions. Horace is the former.
