I can’t sympathize with Pig; I have wall clocks, an alarm clock, and a watch, as well as a mobile phone. Why do some people think that having one of these things means that you shouldn’t have the others as well?
So, if your WHOLE LIFE is tied to a single device, what happens when the device fails some way? I figure I’m better off because I have a phone AND A computer. And I’f figured out how to charge the phone at the other end of the house from my bed, so sometimes I don’t even wake up when it rings. Bliss.
I have a smart phone, but only use it for calls! The screen is too small for me to use it for too many things, but I do use it to look up phone numbers and occasionally names.
The alternative path is to rid ourselves of the entirety of the GOP, then our rage, our terror, and our utter contempt of our fellowman will be no more.
I actually still have an alarm clock, although I use my phone for that more often. But it’s true that my smart phone is the only way that someone could try to contact me now and have a chance of being answered right away. Got rid of my landline once the cell service got reliable enough, and I’m not always look at Email on my computer.
Well, okay, they could come around and start banging on my door.
Technology does try to make itself irreplaceable. We have difficulty surviving without cars, telephones of any sort, clocks, radios, microwaves — they’re all technology. While nobody has to have the latest and greatest, there are precious few who don’t depend on it.
I have to say, even though I have a smart phone and only use it for calls and looking up numbers, I still have a landline so I can dial my smart phone so I know where I last put it down!
As the saying goes in certain technologically au courant circles: “Dumb people use smartphones (like Pig), smart people use dumbphones! (like my burner TracFone)”
I keep my phone in the next room the night before I go to bed. That keeps it away from me while I sleep, and it means I actually have to get out of bed to turn off the alarm.
Still use an alarm clock and landline. I’ve got a smart phone, but we don’t have service where I live and it’s usually almost dead by the end of the day, so I don’t trust it to wake me up.
I never use that thing in the a.m. – it beeps all night with other notifications I thought I’d turned off and drives me nuts. Have a regular clock alarm I haven’t set since working from home since my hubby gets up at 5:15 – so I get up at 5:20…works perfect
We’re doomed. The computer revolution has come, but instead of giant robots laying devastation and fire on us, it’s Alexa and smartphones. They got us with convenience, the clever bastards.
i remember when all we had was the old black landline telephones – there was no choice of color back then- and that was only way to reach someone, besides the mail
Well if you had things actually dedicated to those items, instead of a very poor jack of all trades and absolute master of none taking their place, then you’d be in better shape.

Hmm. I use my smartphone mainly for reading. No need of extra light sources. Very practical.

I find it far more efficient to glance at my wrist when I want to know the time than to fish out my phone and push the button to bring up the screen.

I haven’t needed an alarm to wake me up for 40 years. I get out of bed when I decide I won’t get back to sleep – generally between 3 am and 4:30.

A cheap radio alarm clock is a worthwhile investment. The rule in our house is no cell phones in the bedrooms. Seems to work just fine.
