and a lot of question-asking got a young Thomas Alva Edison drop out of school (his mother tried to homeschool him thereafter, but that didn’t do much either)

Later on, Elizabeth will learn that the brain IS a muscle. The more she uses it and tests its limits, the smarter and more adroit she’ll be.

And some people’s heads DO get bigger because they reach a point where they think they know everything!

Also by the questions the person answers.

As I recollect, “larger head = bigger brain = smarter” was one of the reasons that people gave for the belief that men were smarter than women. Miss Edwards should squelch that idea right away. After all, a big brain alone doesn’t equate with smarts. If it did, elephants and sperm whales would be the smartest creatures on the earth.

Judging by that question, I wouldn’t put her IQ so high…

“Why doesn’t learning stuff make your head get bigger?”

Try talking to some first semester college student know-it-alls. Some of their heads DO swell, though not in the physical sense. ;-)

    Lynn’s Comments:

I loved working with Miss Edwards. She allowed me to pontificate on issues I thought were important…without everyone thinking it was me!

I don’t think Liz’s question qualifies for smarts.

I am fortunate to have a niece, nephew and grandchildren that I have been watching grow and learn. Seeing such questions gives me a glimpse into what is going on in their heads, what they know and how they process that. I don’t remember any of them asking that question specifically – but I’ve certainly heard some in the same category. :-)

It seems that without education and a moral code, the world will pass you by, to piggyback on the discussion of yesterday’s strip. I recalled that as I saw Pinocchio and the boys skipped school and engaged in bad behavior. The lesson of the original story was that children who mock education and morality are often destined to grow up to become adults who are qualified for nothing except jobs which require a lot of back-breaking labor. The Coachman selling the donkeys to such places, like the salt mines, represented how there are plenty of people in the world who will take advantage of the morally dissolute.

Study the brain see how it differs from the muscle.

Yesterday, I fired my long-time biz hosting company. Had to hire an outside webmaster to complete the transition to the new outfit. Asked all kinds of dumb questions. LOL

    Canadian song:

    Don’t know much about history

    Don’t know much about biology

Don’t know much about a science book

Never understood the French I took

I don’t claim to be an “Eh” student

But I’m trying to be, eh?

Here is another point for Stanley and Elizabeth: It is said the cost for each pubic school student is $18,000. That is a lot of tax money. The school year is 180 days = $100 per day. So when John, Elly, Stanley’s parents, or any taxpayer ask them what they learned in school that day, they want their $100 worth.

I disagree. The bigger the head, the smarter the person. Of course I only say that because I’m a 7 3/4.

How old is this idiot child supposed to be, ten? And she thinks information in your brain takes up physical space? Is she familiar with brains or skulls? It’s the kind of question a 4-year-old would ask!!
