Sometimes a deliberately rolled-up ball of tangled lights can be a decoration in itself. I had a styrofoam ball with lights that lasted quite a while, and not being able to replace it when it died, I rolled up a ball of string lights to duplicate it.

Stuff each string into a separate zip lock bag. Works great.
