Yes, there are still bookmobiles. I now live in ‘senior housing’ and during the first wave of the pandemic, when all the libraries were closed, the only way we got books was that the bookmobile delivered them. We weren’t allowed inside, but we ordered books in advance and they were brought in to us. The libraries here in Pgh are now open, but since I no longer drive, I am still relying on the bookmobile. Thank God for bookmobiles…

I used the bookmobile a little when I was a kid. Only a little, since it was easy for Mom to take us downtown to the main library, or to a branch library near the mall. The branch library was also near our orthodontist.

Then you’ve seen him, and what is he doing there?

The county library in Galena, Missouri had a bookmobile and it would come out to the rural farms like ours. It always parked at one of our neighbors who had better shade trees,
