While James Earl Jones voiced Lord Vader and Sebastian Shaw (1905-1994) played him when unmasked and Bob Anderson (1922-2012) as the lightsaber-wielding stunt double, it was Prowse who was the man in the costume the whole time. I honestly didn’t know he had passed on already.
During filming of Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas wanted the twist to be a surprise even to the cast, so he told them it was going to be that Obi Wan Kenobi, not Vader, killed Anakin. During filming of that scene, when Luke said, You killed my father," David Prowse responded, “No, Obi Wan killed your father,” which explains Luke’s devastated reaction. Only a handful of people (including, obviously, James Earl Jones) was in on the real line, which was later recorded. The movie premiere is when everyone else found out the truth. And the rest, as they say, is movie history.
Kudos to you both David Prowse and James Earl Jones for portraying one of the most iconic villains of all-time, Prowse for in costume, Jones for in voice. Matter of fact though, George Lucas wanted James Earl Jones to portray his voice not David Prowse, because his strong accent seemed unsuitable enough for the role.
