But what is the “true spirit of Christmas”? Some will tell you it’s about the savior of the world being born. Others will tell you it’s about love, brotherhood or giving. I haven’t seen much of any of those. I think the true spirit of Christmas is materialism.
Saw this in another comment stream and it bears repeating:
Considering the entire “Christmas” thing was the co-option of a Pagan holiday, There’s actually little room for them to be upset about. The birth of Jesus was sometime in the spring, and had little to do with fir trees, significant amounts of snow, Yule, Saturnalia, Winter Solstice, wassail, and a fat guy with reindeer. It’s a mishmash of observances by druids, Romans, Germans, Norse and other religions and groups that Christians appropriated to make their religion a little more desirable to join. So if they moved Jesus’ birthday, well, Jesus wouldn’t mind if it was for a good cause.
Seems to me the “War on Christmas” was waged by Christians and they won a long time ago.

Goofy never scared me. I was merely disconcerted. Now Oswald Rabbit, I didn’t like him at all.
