When our daughter was much younger she collected stuffed, plush animals. Many she bought for herself, and a number of others she received as gifts from friends and family. Eventually she decided it was time to downsize and separated the ones she wanted to keep from the ones that were to be donated. When asked why all of the ones she was getting rid of were ones that she received from others, she explained that they weren’t ones she chose for herself, meaning she had no investment of desire in them.
She eventually grew beyond that, but it was an interesting observation at the time.

What’s worse than re-gifting? Accidentally re-gifting something to the people who gave it to you.† But “curbside recycling” a gift is also fraught.
† Don’t ask how I know.

Good Will has the trucks to take stuff to different neighborhoods than the ones in which they were donated for exactly that reason.
