    How irresponsible of Gertie, but that’s part of what makes it a story. I’ve encountered some late employees in real life. And I’ve seen people drive too fast, too.

    There is something ominous in the action here. Speaking of “don’t worry” in a similar context, I love the Beach Boys “Don’t Worry, Baby” as a prelude to unmentioned disaster, with the speaker about to drag race out of foolish pride.
