When Rescue and Recovery dogs find too many dead people at a disaster site, they start to get depressed. So, once in a while, one of the rescue party goes and hides in the rubble, so the dog can “find” him. It makes the dog really happy to find a living person. True story.
I have owned 5 German shepherds. My county Parks Department runs dog obedience classes at very reasonable rates. I’ve gone to these classes with all my puppies. Sometimes, we luck out and get one of the dog trainers from the sheriff’s Office. Those trainers always talk to me after class about shepherds. My post is from one of those discussions. Seems GSDs get bored with the nothing happens days and are only happy when they get to chase down a suspect. In the dog’s mind it is “I caught him, I get to bite him.” The dogs feel cheated if they get called off before they get their hard earned bite and eventually will not work, So, most K9 units allow the dog one bite, even if the suspect surrenders. There is now a debate in many of our cities (USA) as to should the dogs be allowed their bite.

No, no, Big Rusty! Make him split the money with you, and you can buy your own doggy treats.

Big Rusty’s usual reward is one free bite of the perp.
