With Fox, Newsmax, Breitbart, Laura Ingraham, and many others already blaming antifa, my thoughts are that nothing was learned yesterday.
Establishment Republicans are now starting to pull away. But they are the “establishment” types that the Trumpians were always at war with, anyway.
Most of all, remember that, after this disgrace, the Senate vote was still 93:6 in rejecting Arizona’s Electoral College ballots. Six Republican Senators are still traitors. Not that we should let any of them off the hook; all of the Congressmen who put up this sham need to be held accountable.
As Mitch McConnell himself said, “This is not just a protest vote.” No worry, they thought; others would do the right thing. What could go wrong?
That was before the milieu.
I like what Chuck Schumer said afterwards.
06 January joins 07 December as a day that will live in infamy.
And yet, Josh Hawley continued to defend his objections to accepting the results of the Electoral College. As I go to bed, presently, they’re still stuck, still debating Pennsylvania’s results.
I guess, for some, there is no such thing as enough.
Pence actually showed himself to be a patriot. Now if a majority of Trump’s sycophant cabinet could do so, we could get a 25th Amendment Solution. But don’t hold your breath — unless you are near one of them or Cruz, or Hawley or …
cdcoventry and JohnAdams96 have spouted conspiracy theories on how the point of Biden’s election was to sweep him aside as soon as he is inaugurated. cdc went so far as to suggest it would be Kamala who would put the knife in his back.
Right now, I’m fearing for Joe’s life. Call it the curse of the zero’s (Kennedy and Reagan, elected in years that ended with zero and were shot) – or call it insurgency.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told reporters that all 1,100 members of the D.C. National Guard had been mobilized on Wednesday afternoon to support the local police.
He said that several federal law enforcement entities would be working to determine “how a clearing operation may be conducted.”
The decision to mobilize the D.C. National Guard — by Secretary McCarthy and Christopher C. Miller, the acting defense secretary — came as a pro-Trump mob breached the Capitol earlier in the day.
Defense and administration officials said it was Vice President Mike Pence, not President Trump, who approved the order to deploy the D.C. National Guard.
It was unclear why the president, who incited his supporters to storm the Capitol and who is still the commander in chief, did not give the order.
President Trump initially rebuffed and resisted requests to mobilize the National Guard, according to a person with knowledge of the events.
It required intervention from the White House counsel, Pat Cipollone, among other officials, the person familiar with the events said.
I wonder how many elected officials, that condemned and wanted to defend the police were very glad to have them risking their lives on their behalf yesterday?
These people should be removed from office, at a minimum.
These members of Congress objected to certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s victory. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/01/07/us/elections/electoral-college-biden-objectors.html
President Donald Trump defended his supporters as they sieged the Capitol on Wednesday, and contradicted aides by ad-libbing parts of the speech in which he told rioters to go home, The Washington Post reported.
As a pro-Trump mob raided the Capitol building during a joint session of Congress, the president defended their actions back at the White House, according to an administration official who spoke with The Post.
“He kept saying: ‘The vast majority of them are peaceful. What about the riots this summer? What about the other side? No one cared when they were rioting. My people are peaceful. My people aren’t thugs,’ ” the unnamed official said, referencing the unrest this summer tied to the Black Lives Matter movement.
“He didn’t want to condemn his people.”
“He was a total monster today,” this official added, saying it was a worse day than when Trump defended the people who took part in the 2017 white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.
But what took place at the nation’s Capitol on Jan. 6 was not a protest, which by definition, is a public demonstration that expresses dissent toward an idea.
The reality is that thousands of armed Trump supporters deliberately charged the building in an effort to prevent Congress from exercising their constitutional responsibility and perpetuate Trump’s false claims of election fraud.
Following law enforcement’s inaction and lack of resistance toward these aggressive rioters, many politicians, journalists, public figures, and Twitter users have denounced the striking double standard in the handling of the pro-Trump mob compared to the response toward Black and brown protesters in the past.
✁
Yet when it came to the violent extremists who charged the Capitol on Jan. 6, Trump described these rioters as “very special” patriots “who have been badly and unfairly treated for so long.”
Galvanized by a sitting president, these armed rioters not only broke through barricades to charge the Capitol, but they did so while casually filming and taking pictures of themselves. They proudly defaced the complex, even breaking into Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office, as Congress members were forced into lockdown.
What was almost more disturbing than the violent acts themselves was law enforcement’s response to the attack. In stark contrast to the excessive force we saw used by police during protests over the summer, Capitol police officers met the pro-Trump rioters with little to no resistance.
Cops were even seen taking selfies with rioters and carefully walking them down the steps of the Capitol.
These rioters are not protesters. They forcefully and intentionally breached the nation’s Capitol, thus the criminal acts they’ve committed make them domestic terrorists, and they should be treated as such.
A coup attempt, incited by a defeated president. That’s a plot line for a Tom Clancy novel, not something that would happen in the citadel of democracy. But yesterday, it did. It was the most significant attack on the U.S. Capitol since the British invaded in 1814.
That disturbing spectacle swamped the other big story of the day: the election of two Democratic senators in the heart of the once-solid South, handing control of Congress to the new president’s party.
Many political analysts in Georgia credited this one to President Trump as well.
As always, the departing President is keeping himself at the center of attention.
For business, it’s the second story that significantly changes the outlook for the next four years. Many business leaders were hoping for a different result—a divided government whose center of gravity would rest with centrists like Romney, Collins, Manchin and Warner.
With clearer control in Democratic hands, the President will be under greater pressure to cater to his progressive caucus—likely creating bigger headaches for business.
Most disturbing is the fact that a significant portion of the American public—including a number of CEO Daily readers—sincerely believes the November election was fraudulent, despite 50 states and some 60 courts that have said otherwise.
According to YouGov, 45% of Republican voters approve of the storming of the Capitol building, based on what they read or heard about the event.
Hard to see how democracy survives when the most basic facts of public life are up for grabs, and immune to resolution.
One British newspaper described the events as “Anarchy in the USA.” The headline on the left-leaning British “i” newspaper was sub-headed: “Trump incites thousands of protestors to storm the Capitol, saying ‘We will never concede.’”
Meanwhile, the right-leaning The Times newspaper had the headline “U.S. Capitol under siege” as it detailed the chaotic scenes.
Both outlets, and other British newspapers, featured the arresting photograph of armed police barricading the door to the chamber of the House of Representatives.
The condemnation of Trump’s supporters’ behavior was across the board, with papers on both sides of the political spectrum criticizing the “mob,” and also outgoing President Donald Trump who had earlier urged his supporters to march on the Capitol and had repeated his unfounded claims that the election was lost due to voter fraud.
Other news networks and news sites, including Sky News, led their coverage summarizing the loss of life and arrests made overnight. Sky’s headline stating: “Riot at US Capitol: Four dead as outrage grows over Trump-inspired mob’s storming of Congress” detailing that 52 arrests had been made.
In France, newspapers also led with coverage of the protests. Le Monde led with the police regaining full control of the Capitol building, noting that “security was no longer threatened.” Le Figaro’s live blog on the front page of its website led with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s comments that “Congress will not be intimidated.”
Papers in Europe also reflected on growing weariness and concern among Republican lawmakers at Trump’s refusal to condemn the actions of his supporters.
Le Monde noted that ”‘Enough is enough’: After the invasion of the Capitol, Republicans close to Trump are turning their backs on him” and center-right German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung headlined its coverage (✁)
To the Republican radicals, THIS is what you have enabled. Trump may have incited the mob, but your blind support of him made that possible. You should be expelled from Congress for your actions.
The the moderate Republicans, you have set on the sidelines long enough. If you truly believe in democracy you must act to preserve it. You must take control of your party and expel the radicals who want to bring our government down.
Just the fact that he issues statement via Twitter is absurd. Another WH statement “attributed to him” ? I realize the inmates have been running the asylum for the past 4 years, but what words can describe this surrealism ?
Many possibilities were discussed last night. That none of them is in the news this morning is perhaps the most disheartening.
My favorite was, since the 25th amendment has this 21 day clock attached to it, for Pence to invoke it now, with 14 days left, no Congressional approval would be needed at all – just let the clock run out – Paul Campos, UC Boulder.
As for a second impeachment, again, only 14 days left. It can be done, and this time, there are Republicans willing to distance themselves from their standard-bearer. Not saying a conviction is certain, but this time, Romney would not be alone.
But the longer we hear silence, the more likely Trump and his supporters will feel vindicated…
