I knew the new sheriff was a fisherman, and, as we all know, fishermen are prone to exaggeration!
An infantry battalion will have six hundred or so riflemen, along with a few dozen light machine guns, three or four heavy machine guns and and a platoon or two of mortar men.
It will also have an infrastructure of senior NCOs and officers to guide and direct its movements and actions. It will also have a commander and his staff to maintain overall direction for the hundreds of troops the commander is responsible for. This is not a crowd of undisciplined vigilantes waving pitch forks and torches, but a highly disciplined force making thoughtfully planned, coordinated attacks on your position.
Every member of that battalion is a highly conditioned athlete who has also been trained to aim, fire, reload, strip, and clean every weapon employed by the battalion.
I am not saying they are all Ramboes. No one is. But I am saying an infantry battalion is literally hundreds of tough customers, armed to the teeth with the best weapons and equipment the government can provide, exhaustively trained in their use, and led by highly trained NCOs and officers.
Even in a Rip Haywire strip I struggle to think that a single teen with giggling fists could best them.
That’s what brings us back to George Flytackle, the putative fisherman, and why I think he may be exaggerating just a smidge.

Good old Lower Slobovia. I remember it from Lil Abner days.

He took out the whole army, fists giggling away the whole time. What a sight that must have been.
