What's the point of giant particle colliders? You can't feed the hungry with them, you can't cure cancer with them, you can't stop poverty with them! I agree! That's why I think we should scrap the Eiffel tower for iron, quarry the pyramids, and turn the Statue of Liberty into copper wiring. I'm not sure that's- Sorry, can't hear you. I used to hear the same sort of arguments about our space program. Computers and cell phones would probably not be so ubiquitous if we hadn’t had the space program. Hmmm, maybe that wouldn’t have bee such a bad thing in hindsight.

It always cracks me up to hear people wingeing about “getting off the grid”. My family is from the rural U.S. South and we spent generations struggling to get on the grid.

As a youth I didn’t pay much attention to the space program due to my own short sightedness. I’m ashamed. Look at all that has evolved from it.

I have long noted that a purely utilitarian society would be soul-crushingly dull. Still, I do favor projects that are likely to have something to show for them.

Actually you can cure certain cancers using particle accelerators. We were treating inoperable brain cancers when I worked at the Bevatron back in the 80s.
