Take a roll of pennies, place them head to tail so that each one adds roughly 1 mm to the length of the roll. Now get enough pennies so that the roll extends from San Antonio to Dallas. At a random spot in that roll, insert a penny planchet marked “You win”. Berle’s chances of winning the Powerball or MegaMillions big jackpot are about the same as his chances of making a random pull and getting that specially marked planchet. If you get $1.00 worth of enjoyment from having a little “skin in the game” when the drawing is held, fine. But you’ll do far better in the stock market while it is dropping than by playing the lottery

It’s about whether you win more than you lose in the long run
