The advantage of barking is that no one can take that away from you.
My wife was a psychotherapist and from the generation that thought it was wrong to suppress any emotions. Seriously, save it for something important. “Drama queens” have all their emotions ignored.

Unfortunately, with dogs, it can also indicate exuberance, need to go out, hunger or automatic reaction to another dog barking a mile away,.
