The Peppermint Patties of today are much better served in schools with so much help for slower learners. Back then, you were thrown in with all other students and good luck to you.
I just read a story about a high school senior in Baltimore with a 0.137 GPA (that is not a typo) and he ranks 62nd in a class of 120. Maybe Peppermint Patty could transfer there…she’d probably be valedictorian.
A history note: Section 504 (Rehabilitation) of the Civil Rights Act, which guaranteed rights to people with disabilities, was passed in 1973. PL 94-142 (federal special education law) wasn’t passed until 1975; this comic was a good year before PL 94-142.
One of our children was born with ‘half a brain’ due to anoxia at birth caused by the attending staff. This meant we had to teach her to crawl, to walk, to talk, etc, and to overcome the destruction of the cholecystokinin receptors in her brain, which latter made her hungry constantly, even after eating so much that it made her vomit.
We had to work with her to teach her to crawl, and to walk, and to talk. She could walk and speak well enough by the time she was of age to be required to attend school. She wasn’t stupid, but had attention issues stemming from the natal damage. She learned with personalized attention.
She started public school when required, but we soon found that teachers and even school bus drivers were feeding her candy, etc., to keep her quiet. She tended to speak up. She was learning nothing useful from public school, so we proposed to home school her.
Enter Public Law 94-142. The school and local school board were afraid to expose themselves to any possible legal action that could result from their failure to provide suitable education for a handicapped child, and so refused to let us home school on the false grounds that they were providing an appropriate personalized program of education for our daughter. Eventually, we went high enough to get permission to home-school our child with the understanding that it was in the best interests of the child, with no prejudice to the school system.
that and people these days seem to be dumber and have way less common sense. most clerks at stores cant figure out your change without a calculator . the register does it for them. if the electricity goes out , they are clueless.

In my class there was also such a nitwit. No one wanted to have anything to do with him… Man, I can tell you I had boring, lonely school days!

Maybe if those teachers didn’t hit you in the head with doors all the time, you’d be a C+ average.
