Am I confused? If the idea involves celebrating female characters created by female creators (as the text of the last panel indicates), how does anyone in Oz pertain, or either of the Chas. Addams characters mentioned, or Mammy Yokum, or Olive Oyl, or Natasha? What am I missing?
Let’s see, from left to right we have, for those characters looking at us or in profile: Mammy Yokum (from Lil Abner), Ozma of Oz, Little Woman #1, Little Woman #2, Nancy Drew, the Narrator (girl version of Carol Lay?), Betsy McCall, Barbie, the Patchwork Girl of Oz, Alice (of Wonderland fame), Morticia Addams (from the Chas. Addams cartoons that inspired The Addams Family shows), and Natasha (from Rocky and Bullwinkle). In the front, with their backs to us, we have Little Woman #3, Olive Oyl, Dorothy Gale, and Morticia Addams. I don’t know which Little Woman is which, and I don’t know why there are only three – one died in the book, but the strip says they picked up four of them. Brenda Starr is in the previous panel, but for some reason is not at the wake.
I was unfamiliar with Betsy McCall. Apparently she was a paper doll that was regularly featured in McCall’s Magazine.

I think Dorothy is supposed to wearing blue and white. Blue for Munchkin land and white for the good witch.

And this just a couple of days after the death of Beverly Cleary, aged 104.

Fantastic strip! We need to be able to buy a print of this one. Can that become possible?

Can someone fill me in the woman who created Mammy Yokum. Al Capp drew the comic when I read it.

My favorite little detail… the fold tabs on Betsy McCall’s shoulders. She was a paper doll from McCall’s magazine, you know.

We sold McCall’s patterns in my dad’s dime store. I think we carried the dolls too.

We could easily add more characters, there are limits.
