Why are you so puzzled Herb? He converted and became a devout Muslim. Of course he’s kept in shadows.

“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.”

“Nonviolence is fine as long as it works.”

“I don’t even call it violence when it’s in self defense; I call it intelligence.”

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.”

“Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery.”

“Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery.”

“You don’t have a peaceful revolution. You don’t have a turn-the-cheek revolution. There’s no such thing as a nonviolent revolution.”

“If ballots won’t work, bullets will.”

After being excommunicated from the Nation of Islam, Malcolm X went on a pilgrimage to Mecca and visited several Islamic nations. He began practicing true Islam, not the Black separtist version he had learned from the Nation. His philosophies and writings changed after that time afthough he never stopped advocating for Blacks to enjoy the social, political, and economic rights being denied them in the U.S.

I teach public speaking at a state university in Georgia, where senior citizens are allowed to take classes for free. A couple of years ago, I had a charismatic older gent in class. We were talking about famous historical speeches, and he let us know that he had actually been AT the MLK “I had a dream” speech. He had been almost an adolescent at the time, and his dad “dragged him” to hear MLK. I asked him what he remembered of the experience, and he said “Being annoyed that I had to go. I much preferred Malcolm X.” I still find that hilarious.

My personal favorite speech of all time is “The Ballot or the Bullet.” Even as a white person, I’m still amazed by the creative thinking, insight, and power of that speech.
