What a very sad situation, best wishes. Having severe OCD, I can easily relate to this, I sometimes try my hardest to put something out of my mind, but if I go a while and it disappears, it comes right back like some sort of bug. I do also have a good sense for multi-tasking and I do have a minor form of ADD, so they do even things out sometimes, but still quite terrible.
Contrary to popular belief, even monsters need love. Invite it in for tea, give it a back rub, and it might just curl up and go to sleep, at least for a little while. It’s funny how trying to hold it at bay or control it actually makes it stronger.
One of the first things I learned in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: avoidance strengthens what you’re trying to avoid. One of my first assignments was to step on sidewalk grates instead of walking around them (I had a phobia about falling through them). No problems with that now. Gotta face things head on sometimes. I’m still terrified of heights, but I can walk on sidewalk grates. That’s something.
