Pete, I was around back then (a little older than Obama) and, as I recall, gorillas were pretty big as marketing tools. Magilla was a very popular cartoon character, and there was a brand of instant breakfast called Gorilla Milk. I think where the cartoonist erred was in the backpack itself. Kids used satchels to carry their books back then, not backpacks.

Marguerite, where I went to school, schoolbags (as we called them) were de rigueur. That aside, nobody used backpacks for school back then.
