I was thinking Boston, but the above mention of Chicago works, too. :)
When I was a recent college grad I was sent to Seattle (1985 or 86, I think). I got to my hotel about dinner time so I ventured out to find some grub. Walking along, I noticed a decent looking place across the street. Being from MA it never occurred to me to go to the end of the block and use the crosswalk. Nooooo, I’m going to cross in the middle of the block because that’s where my target was and that’s what we do back home. I stepped off the curb and scanned for an opportunity to bolt across four lanes of traffic. Four lanes of traffic stopped to let me cross. I sprinted like Jesse Owens in case it was a trick. I was shocked. Nobody beeped, flipped me off…nothing. That’s one of the few things I still remember about that trip lol.
I can remember the ONE time that I almost fainted when that happened to me. Seriously, there are too many cars on the road and too many motorists going at breakneck speed to get somewhere, anywhere…. all at the same time.
Mutt and Jeff have been in production since 1907 – which means they were underway during the Spanish Influenza pandemic. It would have been interesting if some of those 1918 strips had been re-run – we could have seen how the 1918 world dealt with massive major illness throughout the entire world.

The very idea of a considerate motorist was just too much for him.

Is Jeff driving a ’55 T-bird? With no windshield?

Right now, people in big cities around the world are filling in the blank with their own town: “I didn’t know Mutt and Jeff lived in ___________!”
