Yes, his old and favorite joke. However, there’s something to be said for tradition I suppose. I wouldn’t get up and move either. The couple was warned. He got to say his favorite joke, and your roll was to stay comfy and lay there. All was as it was supposed to be.
Bella has a similar habit. In spite of the two dog beds strategically arranged in the living room, her favorite places to sleep are directly across the most logical paths of travel. It’s not so much a hazard to visitors, but I am not particularly nimble.
Dogs don’t cater to us. They just do their own thing. If that includes lying down in the middle of the kitchen when you’re cooking dinner, so be it. My mother tripped over the dog once when she was letting him in the house. She slipped on the icy steps and broke her ankle. For years after, she would look at Gus and say, “It’s all your fault!” Gus would just look cute and wag his tail.
First time I ever encountered this was as a little girl visiting friends of my mother’s. They lived in a two-flat, so the LR was directly in line with the DR which was directly in line with the K. They had a cocker spaniel who I didn’t really notice until we were bringing things from the K to the DR, and there was Misty, happily napping smack in the doorway. Now I have one who is a GENIUS at finding any and all pathways and plopping himself in them.

Mrs. Dear can’t say something? Like “That’s enough of that-it’s old and worn out.”
