Cat scratching posts never die. Just rewrap them in strongly secured sisal rope. I have not bought a scratching post since 2000. Always, always get one that is taller than a full grown cat can reach. Those kitten-size posts are just dumb. It is important that a cat signal how large he is by scratching (and thereby leaving scent marks) as high as possible. If the post is not tall enough, your cat will use your furniture.

There is a round tube on our cat tree that is the favorite spot for our big cat Boots to claw
There is a good sized chunk missing from the tube where he’s worn it down over time
