That’s ‘cause the bag of peas, corn or green beans conform the the anatomy better than an ice pack. Same with rice in a sock for a heating pad; 1-1/2 minutes in the microwave and you’re ready to go.
I make my ice packs by making a simple syrup and double zip bagging it and freezing them. They are somewhat flexible and feel colder for longer than other bags.
Or corn! I kept some in the freezer at work for employees’ injuries and one day I went to get it and it was gone! I mentioned it to my boss and he said he’d defrosted the freezer over the weekend (which I usually did) and threw it out, not knowing what it was for! He should have attended our safety meetings!

Pluggers know that the cold packs that keep their medicines fresh are also good ice packs.;-D

Only the rich folk have frozen peas. . . .
In this neck of the woods, it’s hot grits in a baggie. :-)

They’re great for when men have a vasectomy, also. More flexible.

Not in this house. My husband HATES peas and won’t have them even in the freezer.

They mould more easily to the hurt area. My chiropractor told me that.
