The smile is not the only mystery. Leonardo Da Vinci began the Mona Lisa in 1503 or 1504 in Florence. It is believed to be the portrait of the Italian noblewoman Lisa Gherardini, probably made on commission for her husband, Francesco del Giocondo. However, it was never finished. Leonardo continued working on it for the rest of his life. In 1516, Leonardo was invited by King Francis I to work at the Clos Lucé near the Château d’Amboise and he took the Mona Lisa with him. He probably continued refining the work until 1516 or 1517 when he became ill. He died in 1519. King Francis I became the owner of the painting and it is now the property of the Republic of France.

Block out one side of her face, then the other. One side looks quite masculine. OK, I bought the whole Dan Brown shtick hook, line, and thinker.
