BIG NATE AND THE BET: Part 7

“Now when a plant absorbs sunlight, it turns that sunlight into food. We call this process blah blah blah blah…” Nate tuned out Mr. Galvin’s boring science lecture to focus on his more important dilemma: How could he ask Dee Dee to the dance? He asked her to meet him after school, but what would he do when he meets her? He was drawing blanks left and right. Nate had come up with nothing.

“There’s got to be something I can do to make it easier to ask her.” Nate thought. “Maybe I could take her somewhere away from everyone here and ask her.” That didn’t sound like a bad idea. Nate began to smile, but then began to frown again. “But where would I take her?” He began to think hard, trying to think of places most of the other students didn’t visit often or at all.

Just when it looked like he had run of ideas, Nate suddenly had a epiphany. “The ice cream place where Mr. Rosa works summers! Of course!” Nate began to search his backpack. “C’mon, c’mon, I know I put it here somewhere… AHA!” Nate pulled a small, wrinkled piece of paper out of his backpack. TWO FOR ONE ICE CREAM it said. “This coupon is my ace in the hole!” Nate thought. “Victory is mine for the taking!”

I’ve been thinking about the Big Nate comic strip for a while now. Just like everyone else, I have been noticing a dip in its quality. The comic is getting boring. The comic has increasingly become more repetitive, and the author/illustrator (lincoln Pierce) seems to be running out of ideas. I was thinking about this one day and I thought, “What could Big Nate do to rejuvenate its audience.” After weeks of studying the comic strip, I think I finally know what it needs. (This is a brief disclaimer, but this is all my opinion if you don’t agree then please don’t attack me.)

What I found that could help the strip was character growth. Why people think it’s repetitive is because the strip has been using ideas from earlier comics. This comes out as lazy to readers. If you add character growth it could really add a loop into a story. For once, maybe Nate could try to act nice to Mrs. Godfery. We have seen this already in the comic. For example, notice how Nate rarely even chases after Jenny anymore. This is a step in the right direction, but Nate has been basically chasing every other girl at his school. This is like fixing chaos, but then introducing more chaos to fix!!! Although it sounds good, it might break the formula a bit too much. To make the character growth good in the comic you have to do it subtly. If you do it all at once it will break Nate’s character, which in turn ruins the comic. See Nate’s character makes the story funny. His "selfishness/egotistical remarks are the reason why we laugh at some of the comics. If you flesh out his character and make him nice or something it may ruin the comic because the reason why we enjoyed the comic is gone. If Lincoln Pierce tries something like this he is got to be extremely careful. He is playing with fire. I think he can do it though. He is a pretty good writer in my opinion. (I’ll write the conclusion later. I have no space left. I’m sorry that it’s such a long read. I apologize for any lag I give anyone.)

(this is that conclusion) Will the author do it? To be honest, he probably won’t. To understand this, you have to look at its core audience. It is children. If I am correct, the books he is making (the ones with comic strips in them) are flying off the shelves. This is all from the repetitive nature of his stories. Children don’t care about character growth. If they see something that they like they will take it. This is why Peirce continues to use old plot lines. It’s a winning formula that will rakes in that money. Why change a working thing? Although it’s sad, it is true. Unless children suddenly want something new, we might be stuck with this lukewarm comic strip for a good long while…

I have been realizing how alike me and Nate are. (“Francis” I no that is not proper grammar) I have a good sense of smell (not as good as Nate’s) I am pretty good at chess. (have got a first place trophy once) Have gone to a chess camp.I like cartooning. I even play ALL of the sports Nate plays. I have spiky/curly hair. last similarity is that I am very short (4/6). 2 differences are that I enjoy school and I am like Francis almost in school and I am in 5th grade. Funny right?
