Parenting, like anything else, is a crap shoot. You could do everything right and still wind up with a delinquent. On the other hand, you could be the worst parent in the world, and your child will still turn out a responsible citizen.
It’s all a matter of how you stack the odds. Try not to ruin the lives of other human beings. Stack the odds in favor of, instead of against, your children.
My parents were not perfect and did a lot of things wrong. But my sister and I knew that they loved us and were trying to do the best things for us. So we gave them an A+ for effort which gives them a passing grade. Most kids will cut their parents some slack if they know that the parents really do care about them.
You don’t have to be a perfect parent, you just have to do the best you can.
Nature v. nurture is sheer luck. I have some bad genes, but I turned out only a little neurotic and a functioning member of society for years and years. Second of nine hasn’t ever had a real job and lives off of SSI. She’s vicious as well.
Aunty hit the nail on the head this time! Then it travels into the classroom and the teachers can’t stop it like back in the 50’s and 60’s. Time outs just don’t always work.
After my father retired he became a “caller” at the local high school, his job being to call home when kids had an unexcused absence. He, being of the old school, was ASTONISHED at the response he would get from parents (this is in a middle-class white-collar neighborhood) when he’d call an ask after the kids. One parent, when told his child was not at school, said to him “So what? That’s your problem— you’re the school.”

And, thankfully, some who survive bad parenting turn out pretty darn good.
