In the 1920s, humorist Will Rogers suggested that all liars, thieves and crooks should be sent to Washington D.C., so it would be easier to keep an eye on them. We followed his advice, and look what it got us.

That said, when Washington Territory was separated from Oregon in 1859, there was some talk of calling W.T. and, later, the State of Washington “Columbia” but the geniuses in Congress declared that people would too easily confuse Columbia State with District of Columbia, so they called the severed territory “Washington” which shows that the idiocy of Congress goes way, way back.
