I once took a course on tax preparation and the instructor, a CPA, said that his motto was “When in doubt, deduct”. He said that the chances of being audited was small (and getting smaller) and all that would happen was that they would disallow the deduction and you would have to then pay. But he did say there were a few items that you could be sure to be audited if you included them.

I did, too— but after several hours working on deductions, I did better with the standard one.
