One would think that the teachers would vote to extend lunch period to the entire afternoon!

Back in the stone ages, we did have an hour for lunch. I used to walk home for lunch in elementary school. Most kids didn’t, but I lived just around the block. But even in middle school and high school, we used to leave the campus to hang out at local stores or fast food joints.

Half an hour seems very short for a school lunch, when you count the time to go to the lunch area, line up for the lunch (or get yours out of your locker), then sit down to eat.. then clean up. I don’t think it’s a good idea to encourage gulping down your food, either.

I went to a PTA conference where the people were discussing a sound-activated warning system that they had in place ( seriously, at a public grade school in the cafeteria). The kids ate in shifts and if the kids from one session turned the light red, they lost recess as did all of the kids who came in after them. The principle didn’t see the problem with this.

When I was in Elementary School (back in the 60s) we had 20 minutes for lunch.

When I was a kid in the late 80s and early 90s, lunch and afternoon recess were 45 minutes combined. There wasn’t a single kid who had trouble bolting their lunch in 10 minutes or less so they could get outside!
