Sadly, this is no longer possible. I was very fortunate to be able in 1961 to ride the elevator up and take the stairs back down, enjoying the beautiful carved stone exhibits from the states along the way.
It’s even easier if I stay on the ground. You climb that thing. And I don’t even want look way up at Abe’s chair because if he did stand up he’d be 28 feet tall. I think I have a fear of height and giants.
I used to be obsessive-compulsive as a child until I got into story problems in middle school. That’s when I just started to say stuff like, “Fuggit! One step is one step.”
To go along with all the patriotic representations of the number thirteen (for the 13 original colonies), the height of the Monument, 555 ft 5½ in, is 169 meters. That’s 13 squared.
(If you need something with a little less math in it, the capstone is not actually a stone at all, but a solid block of aluminum. An element with the atomic number…thirteen!)

And if you eats good gazpacho before you begin the climb, you’ll climb at a 9% faster rate than others too. Believe it or not.

And if you double-step, it will be divisible by 6. And if you lie down and someone just rolls you up, it will be divisible by π!

No, it is not evenly divisible by 9.
