I finally had to look up who this “Gritty” person is. Turns out he’s the mascot for the Philly Flyers hockey team. Thought I’d share that for readers who may not live in the US. (or who are unaware of NHL mascots)
My first thought was, “What’s a Gritty?” A little bit of research later: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gritty_(mascot). Okay, now it makes a bit more sense, they are in Philadelphia, after all.
How would people in “town” which is actually a large city know he’s a hermit ? How would wearing an attention getting costume make a hermit feel better ? Seems like the answer to the Bigfoot quest has created even more questions .

Did those kids have a between-strips growth spurt, or is this guy really short?

huh?
He removed his cheap costume and his arms are still that hairy? Just brown, not orange now?
He is a big foot. Related to Eddie Murphy’s Aunt Bunny. If he says “Gooney goo whoo”; get OUT OF THERE!

“He” is referring to “himself” as “guy”.
But, remove the beard… Hmmm….
