So, the sports car crashes into the cement mixer and the cement covers the sports car driver and then the gasoline bakes the cement shell on the driver and vola! Ben Grimm’s origin story, ver 0.1.
This was the very first C&H I ever read. The strip was so new my local newspaper didn’t carry it yet, but I received a gift that used the comics page from another newspaper as stuffing. Funny, I don’t remember what the gift was but I remember this strip.
It reminds me of the slow-motion train wreck we witnessed from November, 2016, through January, 2021, and the aftershocks that we’re still experiencing.
Hey, I’ve been wondering, how does Calvin come up with all these scenarios for him and Hobbs? Is he really that imaginative? DO WE HAVE A CHILD PRODIGY ON OUR HANDS!?!?
Like Calvin, I had crashes with flames. Polystyrene puts out very acrid, heavy black smoke. Consequence – none of the plastic models I put together survived my youth. Nor did my baseball cards, but they ended up as noisemakers on my bicycle spokes.
Reminds me of a future C&H Sunday strip where a derailed locomotive, a crashing jet liner, and a crack in the earth all head towards a farmer’s house which has an unexpected gas leak as said farmer lights his gas stove.
Thank you thank you thank you Mr. Watterson for using the correct word “inflammable”, not the made up “flammable” just because people are too ignorant to learn anything. It goes up “in flames”. Get it?
