I think if both sides of the raft truly cared about their safety and well-being, then, at the least, they would trust the leader to at least try to lead in the right direction.

The raft looks pretty circular. If the leader starts paddling, the Ship of State (heh heh)is just going to go around and around.

If he turns the raft 180 degrees, they’ll all be pointing at him, so that gives him the right to go wherever he wants. Case closed!!

Neither side liked that island in the middle.

So, here’s an oddity. I tried to say “… truly cared about their < ahem > safety and well-being … but the “ahem” part was knocked out. (spaces between the < and ahem were added this time)

Does “ahem” have some inflammatory meaning I am not aware of?

BritishB: If you want to accentuate certain words, just put quotes around them.

I fail to see the problem, he’s got the only “legislative tool” in the boat.

To bold a word, sometimes you can surround it with asterisks. Here, it seems to make it /italic/.

Pointed too many directions. How’s about pointing up the sky directly?
