I’ve mentioned it elsewhere before, but the Australian classic children’s story Blinky Bill (about a young koala) features Blinky’s father being shot by a farmer, told from the point of view of Blinky’s father as the bullets hit him.
That explains a lot about Australians of a certain generation.

I think it’s entirely appropriate for children of five or older. Don’t “protect” children from reality. Explain it to them.
