Imagine that happening with a First World War veteran who had to deal with the Spanish flu pandemic at the same time.

They whined about having to wear a mask and said the weak should die so they could get haircuts. Now a free preventative measure is offered and they throw a tantrum over that too.

Funnily the people who refuse vaccination are dying at the same rate as they were last year. So at least natural selection is picking up the slack.

I have a feeling something else will be sacrificed

Peanuts usually has a “To Remember” strip for June 6th but not today. Glad Lio took up the slack with an excellent strip that is so poignant about the attitude of many today compared to the sacrifices “The Greatest Generation” made so long ago.

MT has had all kinds of great covid strips and this one may be the best of them. This is exactly what’s been so hard to take about the situation. We had generations of Americans go willingly to fight and protect the world from tyranny…and now millions scream and cry about a piece of cloth. Pathetic.

Man has gotten stupider in 77 years….

During World War II, people back home willingly endured rationing and blackouts. If WWII were fought today, we would all be speaking German or Japanese.

I definitely empathize with today’s Lio strip.

I have a friend and coworker who is a WWII buff and has volunteered at D-Day commemorative events for decades. He’s personally known D-Day veterans and reveres them. Yet he fails to see the parallel between the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation and the considerably smaller sacrifices being asked of Americans today.

He’s been kicking the can down the road since it became available: At first “there’s no appointments available” (fair enough at the time), then “it’s inconvenient, I’ll have to take time off from work” and when a mass vax site opened literally next door to our workplace now it’s “I’ll wait for the FDA to authorize it under a non-emergency provision.” Somewhere in there he even used objected to it on moral grounds because of the obscure bit of propaganda that the vaccines include cells from aborted fetuses. I know the guy has no issues with other vaccines because they are required in our line of work (our employer “strongly encourages” us to get the covid vaccine, but falls just short of requiring it). I also know that both he and his wife (who also refuses) have health issues that would put them at high risk if they ever contracted the virus. In the meantime, he gently teases the vaccinated people around him, saying “just wanted to let you know it was nice working with you when you turn into zombies in a couple years.”

At this point, I’ve given up trying to reason with him and I just hope that the declining numbers brought on by those of us who took the jab combined with dumb luck is enough of a defense to protect him.

So f-ing true. When I was a kid, the store clerks, doctors, milk men, etc. were most of them WWII vets, and we all looked up to them, even though they would never talk about the war. When I hear soy boys and woke girls today whining about their pronouns it is enough to make me vomit. Their idea of a hard time is having to wait for their smart phone batteries to recharge, or being forced to move out of their parent’s basement at the age of 42…

Did Mark Tatulli draw that? It’s often hard to tell how good of a serious artist someone who does funny comic strips is. That’s terrific.

Semi-related: I read this week that Carnival Cruise lines is gearing up to resume cruises this month, the first one sailing out of Fort Lauderdale. The main restriction is that passengers (and crew) have to provide proof of immunization.

Florida Governor Ron Desantis signed a law making illegal in Florida for businesses to require proof of immunization and said that he’ll “…fine Carnival $5,000 USD for each violation.”

When asked for comment, the president of NCL (Carnival’s parent company) stated, “Governor Desantis need to remember that our ships all have propellers and rudders, and we can easily relocate to another state.”

Around here they’re offering free beer and lottery tickets to those who get vaccinated. “I REFUSE to get vaccinated!! Oooh! A lottery ticket!”

Ironically, those brave soldiers depicted fought so that guy has the freedom to choose. Personally, my view is, the shot is available. If you haven’t gotten by now, you don’t want it. TV ads, free promos, etc. aren’t going to convince the die-hards. So I say open everything up! Go back to normal, and let those that refused take their chances. People in high-risk categories can still wear masks if they want. Freedom.

This shows how hedonistic, lazy and self-absorbed our society has become. Today “shopping” means lying on the couch with ones nose buried in the stupidphone and clicking links, then expecting the item to show up on the doorstep yesterday. Go to a store and have to walk…?? Oh, perish the thought! It’s supposed to be instant gratification without exerting an ounce of effort.

I dread to think what would have happened if today’s me, me, me generation had been around in the 1940s when there were shortages, rationing, travel restrictions, curfews and lights-out ordinances. We would have lost the war.

Makes one wonder about how many D-Day vets died of COVID-45 because of self-centered, whiny Patri-Nots and the deniers.

Dad was up in one of the planes. Uncle Jimmy was over in the Italian theater, and didn’t come home.

Although an invasion of Western Europe was in the works as early as 1943, what I think was Really the incentive for that was the Russians’ victories at Stalingrad and elsewhere. It was common belief that the Nazis were losing the war, but now arose the concern that Stalin’s forces would push all the way into France. Our relationship with the Soviets was at best tenuous; both knew there would be postwar friction after the defeat of the Axis. So the Western Allies better get in there fast, as the Yanks, Brits, Canadians, Aussies and NZers did. Otherwise the Iron Curtain would be stretched across the English Channel.

What a terribly false comparison! While I appreciate Tatulli’s effort at commemorating D-Day, he missed the mark horribly. Marching in lockstep with the useless and destructive lockdowns and mask mandates doesn’t rate any kind of comparison with storming the beaches at Normandy.

I like to call this generation the, “snowflake generation.” Back then people had tough skin and were willing to sacrifice themselves for the greater good. Now, people literally think their life is over cause they can’t get any reception.

The young French upstart at the counter in Charles de Gaulle Airport demanded to see the elderly American gentleman’s passport. “Last time I was here, no one asked to see my passport!” Rather snobbishly, the rude youth asked, “When was this?!” The old man looked him in the eye and said, “Tuesday, June 6th 1944!”

And the sad thing is that this is one of the few places in which I’ve found something referencing the historic day.
