One of the requirements we had for new managerial hires was that not only would they have training in running their own department, but they had to spend one to two weeks cross-training in each of the other departments. Employees in key positions would also receive cross-training.
The time and expense it took to cross-train and educate employees was well worth it. It not only produced better workers and increased productivity, but added to employee morale and retention on all levels.
