    My son created and maintained a Disney Fan website back in the nineties when he was in primary school, and it didn’t cost a dime – that I’m aware of.

    THIS is why monetization of websites happened with ads. it wasn’t cheap to build and maintain them.

    Brings to mind when Zuckerberg was testifying before the senate and he had to answer the question of FB’s monetization to some Luddite. He really had to struggle not to roll his eyes and grin when he responded “We have ads, Senator.”
