Sometimes you have to see beyond yourself, your time and your surroundings.

Looks like my yard now, 3 saplings replaced the 3 mature ash trees that the emerald ash borers got to. I knew they had to go when the city tied the pink ribbons of shame on them.

We’ve been in our place for nearly 18 years. It has two glorious over 100 ft towering spruce trees that were planted by the homesteaders who arrived in 1870.

We also have mature maples and white pines that were planted by the fellow who built our house in the 1970s. He still lives across the road.

Then there are the red pines and apples planted by the next owners in the late 90s. Those were barely taller than us when we moved in. 10 years ago the pines were blocking the view from our deck, and were wondering if we should thin them. Glad we never got around to it. Now they are so tall we are looking through the lower thin branches to our view again.

In 2004 we planted some small aspens to shade the front of the house that got to 20 ft in 10 years before they sadly caught canker and we lost them.

All this is to say, please go ahead and plant trees. Yes they are a gift to the future, but chances are you will get enjoy their shade in the meantime.

Martin Luther said that if he knew the world would end tomorrow he’d plant a tree.

Today, we are reminded of the “official” reason Leo was brought into this comic strip: Francis needed an assistant to help with getting around.
