While ostensibly unqualified to practice medicine as a physician, Hyde arguably might have passed muster as a surgeon. Even today, surgeons in the UK and Ireland (and to a lesser extent in Australia and New Zealand) continue to be addressed as Mister rather than Doctor. I take it that this goes back to the days when physicians were expected to have advanced degrees, but surgeons were only expected to have knives and saws.

On the other hand, Dr Hyde would be more familiar with deviant personalities.

Why did Dr. Jekyll cross the road? He was trying to Hyde.

There are plenty of people who call themselves “doctor” who shouldn’t be trusted to practice medicine.
