This movie WAS a classic! I will never forget when it premiered in my hometown. Because the movie was silent, there was (obviously) no sound, so the theater owner organized a competition to select the best local “honker” to provide the “sound track”. The winner, a middle aged man with incredibly large nostrils, stood next to the screen and whenever the camera did a close-up on Elmo’s nose, the winner would blow his own nose as a sound effect, to the delight of the crowd. I think the competition was sponsored by the local Five and Dime store, in conjunction with a sale they were having on some off-brand of facial tissue. The winner got a whole case of facial tissue and several long sleeve shirts, thrown in as a kind gesture for those days when he might forget the tissue at home. And the winner got a nickname out of the experience. Yep. I remember ol’ Snotty. I never did learn his real name. We tried to stay out of his range during hay fever season.
