This is a common fallacy. Women think that having a kid/kids will save their marriage but just the opposite happens in many/most cases. A child is not a shared joy for very long and when the reality of responsibility hits home, the child/children become a wedge in the crack of the relationship. In too many cases the children become pawns. We have all seen it.

Reminds me of the humorous verse evangelical psychologist James Dobson liked to recite:
Never hit a child in anger,
never hit them while irate.
Save it for some happy time
when both are feeling great.
