The most dangerous part of the dive was probably before the dive – standing on the top of the step ladder (although I still do it when I want to clean the gutters or want to go onto the roof of my house).
This reminds me of a Calvin and Hobbes strip which was just one panel. Calvin was preparing to do a backward dive into an inflatable pool and Hobbes was saying “You’d better hurry up. Your Mom’s yelling something.”
One commentater suggested Mom was yelling “Jump!” but another suggested that Mom was running to catch Calvin as well as yelling to him.
Today’s Calvin and Hobbes reprint shows another hazardous leap by Calvin.
I remember a dive my dad used to do. He’d get up on the diving board, looking all professional, bounce about 3-4 times, come down on the board on his butt, then belly flop into the water (not a TRUE belly flop…enough to look funny). Never failed to crack me up.
A deeper pool, a diving platform or diving board of about the same height (or a little lower) which extends far enough from the edge of the pool, leaping far enough from the diving platform or diving board, & no one below & Red could accomplish his diving goal safely.
