Long time ago Parker Brothers sold a toy called Oobi, an orange egg with googly eyes. People were supposed to pick it up, read the message inside (including the address of the eventual recipient), add their own message, and leave it for someone else to pick up (not in a mailbox). PB later said it was one of their biggest failures. I remember reading people were afraid perverts would use it to get kids’ addresses. Didn’t seem too likely to me, but the fear may have been what killed it.
I have one now that I found in 2017 in a park near our former home on the Alabama Gulf Coast. I remember seeing a newspaper article a few months before that about how it was a new local thing. But I do know the trend picked up a lot during 2020.

Schmoz looked up at the aliens and hoped they wouldn’t interfere with his scouting mission in preparation for the invasion.
