There is no easier way to escape than a book. I feel sorry for those who won’t read. I have had more adventures in my lifetime than than should be allowed one human.
A big event in the summer time was when Mom would call, “Get your library books!” Children were not allowed in the main library, just the children’s library down stairs. We were always ready to go before Mom was, so one day the three of us were sitting in a corner of the entrance reading our new library books while waiting for Mom. A lady with a big camera asked, “Have you been bad?”
“No, just reading our books.”
“Well, aren’t you cute! May I take your picture?”
She posed us as if Carol was reading to her little brother and sister. I was the oldest but did not look like it. She took several pictures, thanked us and went away.
Then the children’s library was closed for a couple weeks. I was disappointed that I could not go to the library with Mom the next time she went.
When it opened again, it was all freshly painted and looked very nice, and there was a big photo of a little girl reading to her little brother and sister. The boy was barefoot. Kids at first did not believe that was us.
