Carmy! So nice to see you up at this time, but you’d better get some sleep. Joy set the timer for the coffee alsready, and I’ll set the bagels over here. I hope that the snow doesn’t prevent Digital from bringing those lime buns.
Marg, I am on my way to bed. I don’t know if Owlsly got my last comment. He said the Bmonk’s mother had passed away and that we should post on pib our condolences.
274?!?! And I thought I missed a lot while I was at work. Guess I can only blame myself for sleeping. I guess there was a contest - I hope we won. I just scrolled through the last 100 or so. Did I miss anything? Owlsly, you did a great job!!
Akenta Yes we won, but I personally don’t want to get into that again. It was done in a friendly manner, but I would hate to see it turn into a “pissing” match, you know!
pookid, hope you feel better soon.
Joy, thanks, I don’t know if you got to check yesterday’s posts, but it was fun. We were commenting on old movies, you know, the classics. I am still tired. I don’t know if I could/would do that again. I love the cannon.
Sounds like a missed a wild ride yesterday at Big Top. I am back from the walking dead and this is the first time in 24 hours that I have any desire for food. So bring on the chocolatey goodness.
Morning Folks! Just stopping through on my morning constitutional in reviewing the educational pages before starting the days grind. Hope all is well. And doc, don’t be distressed about someone sounding defensive, there would be no competition without team pride. I’m sure everyone knows it was meant in fun. Consider a little chiding as sarcastic humor. It’s when it dissolves to childish name-calling and ridicule such as a few with SOTU have succumbed we aim to avoid.
.
Owlsly Whistlepig, You did well in support of your team.
Good Morning all,
Thank you for the credit Doc, but Dry deserves it more, I was just there to help the graveyard shift keep going.
Carmy, you shouldn’t stay up so late if you have to get up so early, it can’t be very healthy.
Jdoc, I know but, I had a late afternoon nap yesterday. I think I was out for 2 or 2 1/2 hours. So I really wasn’t tired until a little after midnight. I will definitely get to bed early tonight.
Hey all I quickly read a post over at Pibgorn, I went over to post to bmonk again) and came upon a reference to us, so people, I guess we are now known as ”The Tribe”. Think we ought to get t-shirts made up? LOL
Well after so much inactivity lately I am going to go for a bike ride around our lake. If anybody is interested in joining me, come over and I will make espresso to give us a little jolt than we can begin our ride. Fresh apple turnover are awaiting our return.
Did I make sense about napping? I think I was trying to say that a short nap (or a catnap) is like a recharge for you and that would be invaluable. A long nap, like 2 hours or more, is not so good if it messes up your regular sleep pattern. Okay, enough about naps.
Carmy, I meant to say “a nap can be invaluable.” I do agree it throws off my sleeping schedule too.
Dry, I think it is possible that all the pleasantness that we brought over there could be killing the angryness (is it a word, I don’t know) that had resided over there.
JFri - In your post of four letter words … commic is BOLD. Did you mean for that to happen?
.
Also, the words “then, “that”, and “with” would be bold.
.
Just pickin’ on you. did you save the original story with it’s accolades or do you have to go back and reinsert them?
I found this online from the Miami Herald. It’s long article, this is just the first sentence;
Researchers say they have found the first piece of the genetic puzzle that could lead to greatly improved diagnosis, treatment and even prevention of autism.
I’m praying they get that puzzle solved. I would love to have a conversation with my youngest, Rebekah. She is quite non-verbal.
okay all. i wont be here much. i have “wasted time” as my dad tells me. i have a 4 page essay due tomorrow. (Sigh) well i will see how many post there was last night after i said good night. will have to read them latter from the sound of it. hope to see you all soon.
“we live we love we forgive and never give up, ‘cause the days we are given are gifts from above and today we remember to live and to love.” -super chick we live. best song.
Tabby I agree with your dad, I am wasting, (not wasting, more misusing my time) I have a genetics exam in about an hour, and I really should be studying. Good luck with your essay.
AAAAARRRRRR ye scurvy dogs! Be blamin’ me* fer the tag at SOTU, will ye? *Joy Ye avatar brings back the scary memories fer this old pirate! ‘Twas a close call sailin’ up the inlet to pick ye up!! And JFri, I was only tryin’ ta give ye the benefit of me experience! No call ta hit a scalawag fer that!
JFi, sorry about your accident. We still are in a dry spell. It’s bizarre, I actually had to water some of our new perennials as it’s been over two weeks without water and everyday we get some sunshine. Crazy, but I’m not going to knock sunshine in the Pacific NW.
Dry, thanks for your concern. It was a bit more of a workout for me. More for my wife though. She has a spinal cord injury and she has some issues with muscle control. On the second to the last hill before home, her leg gave out on her. It’s amazing over the years how one adapts. I leaped off my bike and was able to catch her before she fell. She is the most disciplined woman I’ve ever met. She was a very accomplished athlete when we met. She still fights on through the pain. She can’t ski anymore, but she can still swim and bike. She stays toned and always beautiful. She inspires me, a naturally lazy shlub.
Joy, I like your avatar. I’m hoping to go over there sometime this summer and see it for reals.
Will probably go see the gators again too. We may have visitors from Chicago, they will get a kick out of that.
Dry, I was thinking of a comment in regards to the “tribe” t-shirts. I was thinking of the Atlanta Braves. Aren’t their fans the “tribe”? Or am I mistaken? Also does it matter if so?
Cleo - Loved the comment on Last Kiss. Sounds like You may be getting company soon.
Sorry about your wife’s injury. I guess she has tried a lot remedies. Don’t know how you feel about chiropractors but mine has done wonders for my headaches. After 10 years of traditional medicine. Still admire her for not letting her get her down and riding a bike.
dry carmy joy doctortoon were all keepers of the flame last eve and should be commended for thereefforts to bring home thebacon for we here of the TRIBE sorry if i myst anyone
carmy that’s more than I can tell you. I don’t follow baseball mcu, football yea, though I’m in a quandry who to root for now. I was/am a BIG Brett Favre fan! Guess I’ll have t give Aaron Rodgers my support, but I can’t stand the Packer management! Especially TT!
Dry, since my husband is a “sailor” he has the habit of calling everyone by their last names. So he calls me by my maiden name. It bugged me at first, then I got used to it. I call him by his last name too now.
tabby I’ll bet Mr. Harrell is really enjoying the new found fame of his comic strip! It really is a lovely strip, perhaps only second to Overboard in my book, then I think 2 Cows & a Chicken, 9 Chickweed Lane, and the Barn. And then of course I read about 100 strips a day, all faves, but those are the favorites I think.
Oliphant did a toon on the swine flu. I thought the comments were pretty interesting. If anyone wants to see it just type Oliphant in the “find a comic” box on the upper right of this page.
Carmy and owlsly, j and dry wow. oh my goodness. i was about to lose it. that was a lot of post. Dry you said goodnight like 10 times. oh my. lol you guys did good. once i left you kept it up. thanks. i was so tired and my hw didnt even get fin. lastnight. lol
carmy there was just a commercial on our local PBS station. They are having a documentary called Autism: Childhood to Adulthood. It’s running Thursday evenin at 9 on our PBS. You may want to check it out to see if it’s on yours, or not.
Dry nope. she is a teacher. they are getting younger and younger every year. lol. she is a sweet lady. Mrs. Botts. last year was her first year teaching and she got married around chirstmass 08 so she is young. lol but a great person. and friend. im friends with all of my teachers. lol so i am such a nerd, but a proud one. :D
okay i was about to work on my essay, then my stupid brother got a line from a fav movie stuck in my head. so here you go see if you know what movie…..(One woman saying this) “he ran into my knife, he ran into my knife ten times.” (several women saying this) “he had it coming, he had it coming, he only had himself to blame, if youd been there, youdve seen it and you would have done it too.”
tabby walk away! Go outside, sit and think about your paper. The end of the school year is coming up. You want to get a good grade on that paper. Just take an hour and see how it goes! Besides if your dad thinks you’re wasting too much time with us wonderful folks, he’ll ban you from here! I would do it to my kids if it was infereing with school work!
dry he dosent know about this he thinks im wasting my life away when im on here lookin up research even. :( anyways i will walk away for a while. thanks. see you all later.
My ‘puter got mad and went crazy on me. All is well now.
Goodnight Joy, You’ll have to explain the “licenses” to me. That went over my head.
Tabby, another nice photo. That line is from “Chicago”, (he ran into my knife…)Do your homework!
JFri, Your pooch is so sweet, he’s worried about you.
Dry, I’ll try to catch that Autism thing on PBS. I might be able to see it on the net.
Carmy: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if they could find a reversal for autism? My friend has an autistic grandson. My daughter works as an aide at a highscholl for a student with Asperger’s syndrome.
Dry, thanks for the ‘splanation. I do understand that the locals get bothered sometimes. We used to go through that on South Padre Island with the tourists.
Dry: The weather is quite nice here now, and I’m outside a lot. I really don’t get back in to the computer until around 3:30. I took my therapy dog to the hospital this morning, where he got his 100 hours of service pin, it’s shaped like a paw print.
Dry, from what little I know about aspergers is that it’s a form of autism.
Have any of you checked out the comic Clear Blue Water? The lady who draws that strip has as autistic son and the topic is mentioned in her strips a lot. She also talks about in her blog.
I’m thinking of making ice cream either this weekend or next. The hardest part I have with it is knowing how much salt to use with the ice. Any advice?
okay so most of you on here have kids. so have any of you gone throught the MLA format of internal citations? i can never remember how to do that. i got 2 more paragraphs writen, but i cant remember how to do the citation stuff. any help would be great.
Akenta homemade ice cream? Yum! Haven’t had that in years! Never made it, but you could google it. Maybe try Teri’s Kitchen or google a site that offers authentic Amish recipes. I like Ter’s kitchen. Practical advice and good recipes!
Akenta I’ve heard of Clear Blue Water but never checked it out. I will though! LOrdy, all I need is another strip to read! Lord help me! I’M NOT ADDICTED TO COMICS! No I can walk away anytime! (Yeah right, started when I was old enough to read, but I can just walk away! LOL!)
Akenta You know, thinking about it, my sons don’t read comics and neither does my husband! No wonder they frown when I stick a new one up on my fridge! OMG does that make me a “Plugger?”
I can see why we’re missing some of each others posts. I was away and came back to check. They are posting out of order or else we are all typing at the same time and overloading the system LOL!
Dry, thanks for the yoga suggestion. Actually, are day begins (after gocomics) with a hot tub, overlooking the lake, then she does yoga, followed by our bike ride. And yes, it does help.
Akenta, homemade ice cream? That is great, I guess you can make any flavor you want. Is Clear Blue Water on gocomics?
Dry, My husband doesn’t read comics either. My girls do, except Bekah.
JFri, Did you have to get stitches?
donkeymom, thanks for your comment. My wife is a trouper and it’s frustrating how the medical community has trouble with accepting the notion of pain and how to help out. They often think the patient is just trying to get pain killers and my wife is not there.
doneymom, thanks for your comment. My wife is a trouper. It’s irritating how the medical community is so in the dark ages with pain. They assume everyone who is in pain is blowing their symptom out of proportion to get pain killers.
I can’t remember the exact flavor I’m going to try and make - something along the lines of chocolate, but they call it something different. I kind of want to bring it in to work (esp for the warehouse since it gets hot out there). If it turns out good, I’ll save some for everyone here.
Cleo, the military medical is total opposite. They push the painkillers. When I had my cancer operation, I woke up in ICU and was told that I had an epidural and a pain ball. Then they gave me a push button to trigger morphine when I needed it. THEN, they kept reminding me about the morphine that I never “pushed” for. I was so numb, I didn’t need the morphine, yet they kept bugging me about it.
Dry, as far as “Last Kiss” is concerned, John Lustig takes vintage cartoons and adds new captions. Occasionally they will run for a couple of days, but most often are new.
As for your comment about my comment on “Last Kiss”, see my response to John’s offer.
Akenta, I use a Donvier ice cream maker. It is inexpensive and makes great ice cream in less than a half hour. For a basic vanilla ice cream that is simple and tasty and makes about 1 quart, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 3 cups half and half and 2 teas. vanilla. Mix all ingredients and add to chilled cylinder and crank every couple of minutes.
Carmy, I mean roughly the same thing about the medical community in general. They have no solution for pain other than pain killers. My wife wants to manage pain, not be doped up.
I think I have a Dolly Madison ice cream maker (something I found on Ebay). It makes good ice cream, but never the right texture (never stops me from eating it). I just pour the ingredients into the metal thingy in the middle, put ice and salt on the outside and plug it in.
Jfri im one of those people who are strange. take a pic (if you can ) of your hand and post it Please just for a little while so i can see it. i bet it looks so Cool ( i so should have been a guy, when i get married in a long time, my husband will be happy i love sports and stuff like stiches. )
Akenta thanks for the site. it is helpful. also i have my teacher on facebook right now reading my paper and telling me what she thinks, its 4 pages. im doing great. it has to be 6 by the end. lol. i got that.
carmy, my wife, who is a nurse, actually worked at a pain management clinic. There are any number of ways to try to deal with pain. One of the biggest causes of pain, which I noticed with my wife, when I first met her, is depression and stress. If you can maintain positive thoughts to getting through the day accomplishing what you can and focusing on other positive things, like a love of gardening, etc. This helps a lot. I have to say, my wife’s pain has decreased significantly since she has managed to put stressful elements out of her life. When I met my wife, she was going through a divorce and suspected that her husband was leaving her because she was no longer able to do the activities to which they became accustomed. That is no longer on her mind. We are in a different place and it is better.
Carmy i have the same problem, with catching up. i got off for a while to do my essay, liek you and dry told me to. and i come back to almost a page to read.
Cleo, that makes a lot of sense. Even when I get headache, before I reach for painkillers, I think about what is causing this pain. Do I need to eat something, take a break or what. I will figured it out and pass on the pain killers.
BTW, you and your wife sound like a perfectly good match and that is a true blessing.
Um, you’re welcome Dry. The avatar is another pic from the game I play. I was trying to find a picture of another toon, but I saw this scenery and decide to post that instead. I probably take pictures of my other characters and just rotate them around here.
cleo I did check out Last Kiss and saw his comment! That’s why I said on there or here, i forget which, “shame on you” :-)
My mom was a nurse also, Lt in the Army Nurse Corp during WW2. Took care of people like Jimmy Doolittle, Elenore Roosevelt, BlackJack Pershing when he was an old man, Gen. Patton wehn she was at Walter Reed. Rode the Army trains , was an RN for 40 plus years. When she passed, there were former patients, doctors and nurses at her service. They said she was one of the best nurses ever because she TRULY cared about her patients, really knew her stuff, and went out of her way to take care of her patients, even breaking “rules” to let visitors in, etc. My mom was one of a kind!
Owlsly, since I was sick yesterday, I was only, just today able to work my way through a few of late last nights comments, that soda company with unusual flavors Is Jones. Maybe somebody already passed that on to you.
doc I thought Radical Knight came up with the Tribe! Well, in that case, you can buy the t-shirts! As like you, I am not awake enough to absorb all this, but I will check out your ministry site. I took a quick look but want to read it when I have more time!
Akenta it will probably get crazier, but I will have to at some time share the computer, so I’ll be off sooner than later! Anyway, I did my part! I checked my posts, and I have about 50, but I broke them up for that reason! LOL
I’m sorry Dry, I must be dense. I’m still trying to figure out the “shame on you” comment in relation to your explanation. We are talking about today’s “Last Kiss” correct?
cleo it was on LAst Kiss, when you said about making dinner. I put that comment in, but then decided it wasn’t appropriate and deleted it! I’m sorry for the confusion! Forgive me?
doctortoon, I could go for a “The Tribe” T shirt. I like wearing shirts with interesting comments. Of course there would have to be a picture. It certainly would provoke comments if we were “The Tribe” of Big Tops. :D
well then doc You go get your smooch, have a GREAT night, and sometime tommorrow we will hook up! I have to change my friday routine with my dad to tomr. because Fri we have to tour a college, and will be gone all day.
Instead of being The Tribe” maybe we should become the “Yappy Nuts”! Doc, you crack me up! Anyone who wants to know what I’m talkin’ about go to Pib, 4/29, page 4.
Dry - Actually I coined the name “The Tribe” the day everyone packed up and left Prickly City and moved to Big Top. I thought of the indians following the buffalo herds. If there is another more pertinant story, I wasn’t aware of it and it makes my calling a coincidence. I like being part of the Tribe’s beginning.
Just out of curiosity, has anyone even commented on Rob’s cartoon today about Wink’s “Please sup from my chocolaty goodness”? (Did he misspell chocolaty?)
How is there 248 comments? Is there another contest? No wonder Doc needed three cups of coffee.
Rad, I think carmy posted on the strip in one of the first comments. I love it “chocolatey goodness.”
Good night all who are going to bed. Rock on peoples who are staying up, I will be back in a bit.
I’m in the middle of watching “The Great Escape” for the umpteenth time. The comments here are slacking off I guess everyone here is making the great escape into their “other” lives.
I Posted this on Pibgorn. I’m posting this here just to clue y’all in.
C’mon people, The “OTC” @ Pibgorn and “The Tribe” @ Big Top are familial sites and of two different genres. Big Top’s central focus is the camaraderie and lives of each other. In their words, They’re a party group and they excel at having fun. At Pibgorn, we have built a community around a Couch of Confusion to discuss members/friends, the Pib-verse, computers and a whole multitude of things including heraldry, music, math and Fedoras; and we enjoy this.
.
Sorry guys, I didn’t mean to lecture. I just think we should enjoy our groups and not worry about being upstaged by anyone else. Some just see it as having a little competitive fun.
.
That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.
Personally, I like a little competitive fun, that’s why I do puzzles and trivia. I think what riled a few feathers was HOW it was done.
.
Like I told them at Pibgorn - That’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.
The daily build up of news on the swine flu gives one concern. Today, I’ve heard talk by health workers who specialize in protocol for infectious diseases and there is talking of closing down borders with other countries and recommendations on stockpiling 2 weeks of non-perishable food items. Scary stuff.

She inspires me, a naturally lazy shlub.

donkeymom, thanks for your comment.

Akenta over 15 years ago
I can’t remember the exact flavor I’m going to try and make - something along the lines of chocolate, but they call it something different. I kind of want to bring it in to work (esp for the warehouse since it gets hot out there). If it turns out good, I’ll save some for everyone here.
Akenta over 15 years ago
I did look on the internet for the salt/ice ratio and got both 5:1 and 8:1

Cleo, the military medical is total opposite. They push the painkillers. When I had my cancer operation, I woke up in ICU and was told that I had an epidural and a pain ball. Then they gave me a push button to trigger morphine when I needed it. THEN, they kept reminding me about the morphine that I never “pushed” for. I was so numb, I didn’t need the morphine, yet they kept bugging me about it.
cleokaya over 15 years ago

Akenta, I use a Donvier ice cream maker. It is inexpensive and makes great ice cream in less than a half hour. For a basic vanilla ice cream that is simple and tasty and makes about 1 quart, combine 3/4 cup sugar, 3 cups half and half and 2 teas. vanilla. Mix all ingredients and add to chilled cylinder and crank every couple of minutes.
carmy over 15 years ago
Marg, YES, it would be absolutely wonderful if they found a way to reverse Autism. I hope that can do it very soon.
cleokaya over 15 years ago
Carmy, I mean roughly the same thing about the medical community in general. They have no solution for pain other than pain killers. My wife wants to manage pain, not be doped up.
Akenta over 15 years ago
I think I have a Dolly Madison ice cream maker (something I found on Ebay). It makes good ice cream, but never the right texture (never stops me from eating it). I just pour the ingredients into the metal thingy in the middle, put ice and salt on the outside and plug it in.
carmy over 15 years ago
Cleo, sorry I misunderstood. Do they offer classes for pain management? If they don’t they should. I would rather not be doped up either.

carmy, my wife, who is a nurse, actually worked at a pain management clinic.

Tribe, giggles and who haas, but you’ll have to figure this one for yourselves!! wink wink!
carmy over 15 years ago
Cleo, that makes a lot of sense. Even when I get headache, before I reach for painkillers, I think about what is causing this pain. Do I need to eat something, take a break or what. I will figured it out and pass on the pain killers. BTW, you and your wife sound like a perfectly good match and that is a true blessing.

JFrisch hope you heal well and quickly. That sounds like a nasty injury.

The daily build up of news on the swine flu gives one concern. Today, I’ve heard talk by health workers who specialize in protocol for infectious diseases and there is talking of closing down borders with other countries and recommendations on stockpiling 2 weeks of non-perishable food items. Scary stuff.

Well, I enjoyed today’s hot fudge sundae. Perhaps tomorrow they can hypnotize something equally as tasty.

Not sure I am a huge fan of “The Tribe,” that is what they call the cleveland indians. Being an avid baseball and Tigers fan, I hate the indians.
