Morning, all. Good to see ya, Owlsy & Akenta. Always stimulating, doct. Marg Thanks for the bagel. I’ll add some nice juices to the table. Mix your favorite with orange, grape, apple, cranberry, tangerine, and pomegranate - all nicely chilled. I’ll make the rounds & be back.
Good morning everyone I’d like to grab a bagel and some juice as I don’t feel like making breakfast today. This is my day off so I thought I’d get to sleep in for a bit. But I must have forgotten to inform my dog of this so she still wanted out at the regular time. Oh well. Doctortoon, I agree that a daily dose of comic strips is the greatest.
Morning, tribe!
I’ve got a busy day ahead of me, but I should be at the house the whole time. Therefore, I’ll keep popping in and out all day.
TABBY - just ignore the trolls - they feed on getting a reaction out of people. If you don’t respond to them, they’ll get tired of it and move on to a new target.
SHIKAMOO, CLEO, DCGUYS and anyone else…
Sounds like we all have some interesting learning to drive stories. My dad started me at 7, driving from our farm to our house in the city. I had to sit on the edge of the seat to reach the pedals. It was an old pickup with stick on the floor, and the gears were never in the same place twice in a row. At the beginning, I operated the steering wheel, clutch, brake & accelerator, while he moved the gearshift. Later, he had me driving in the field from bale to bale, while he and my 3 brothers picked up the bales of hay and placed them in the truck.
I took driver’s ed at 14 & got my restricted license then. At the time, it didn’t cost extra to take driver’s ed at school, so I’m sure Dad let me so we could get a discount on the insurance. Full license at 16, and been driving ever since. It scares me more to have my sons driving, but I tell myself that’s because Wichita’s gotten larger, and there are more highways with heavy traffic. Back when I started driving legally, 55 mph was the maximum legal speed everywhere in the U.S., there weren’t as many limited access highways in the city, and the traffic wasn’t as heavy. But I’m thankful we live out here in the country, so that my sons have been able to improve their driving skills where there is less traffic before getting into city traffic.
Yup, the stress level of learning to drive in the country sure eases the process. I bought my wife’s brothers motor home from him 4 years ago. I had never driven anything that long before and he lives in Fullerton, CA. So my first experience behind the wheel was on the streets and freeways of Los Angeles.
I’m looking forward to more of these stories, RRAMOM. It’s interesting learning the different areas everyone learned various pieces of their lives - cooking, driving, etc.
Out in the Country - Three Dog Night (for RRAmom)
Blueberries for Breakfast - The Mamas & the Papas
ABC - Jackson 5
Just hitting on a few of the topics so far this morning.
Good Morning all! I’m here early because I need to go have my yearly mammo. I think I’ll practice by laying down on the driveway, and having my husband run a rear tire over my chest a few times.
Glad you enjoyed the bagels; thanks for the juice!
TABBY: I agree with what the rest have said. Ignore the trolls, they love to try and embarrass people. As AKENTA said, go back and fix your mistake, then everyone will wonder what the troll is complaining about.
DOC: Thanks, I’ll make a withdrawal. That description is from a cartoon that they have hanging on the bulletin board where the mammography machine is located. Women need to have a sense of humor about the whole thing.
My first car was a ‘74 Galaxy 500 2-door. Can you say ‘super-boat’? Was an ugly green and had just enough dings down the side to say “Hey, I don’t really care about this car, do you care about yours?” - I never had any problems merging into traffic, people always made room.
.
JFri - The best defense is a good offense
doctortoon - The law of gross tonnage is a good thing. The one thing that always drove my to the crazy bin was those jerks that cut in front of you and slam on their brakes, never considering how much weight that the RV behind them has and how tough it is to slow a big rig down quickly. Stuff flies everywhere. Well today I am going to try to sell my RV. We have lots of good memories, but the maintenance and repair bills have taken the joy out of it for me. I never had problems with the engine. It was the RV aspects that add up, leaks, auto steps, fridge, etc.
Doc My sister’s first car was like that - a 52 Olds Super 88. Had belonged to the father of one of my dad’s best friends and been up on blocks in a garage for 3 years. She had a very appropriate bumper sticker for it:
My first car was a 43 Olds; second car was a 48 Crosley.
Then I got my drivers license. 2 50 Fords and a 51 Lincoln after that. The Lincoln was a tank and drove like one.
DRYSTHA: When you arrrive, this is my last word on my ill-fated post.
After all my talk last week on SOTU about love and respect for one another, I can’t beleive I didn’t see the disrespect I showed you AND the gentlemen in the Tribe. So I’ve deleted that post, but not the other comments to remind me to read before I post.
Here’s a spray of spring flowers for the whole group to enjoy! peace and love too.
Never said I listened to ABBA. At least my first car wasn’t some lame piece o’ junk! I had a ‘69 Firebird 400 with hood mounted tach, positraction, headers on dual exhaust with Cherry Bomb glass pack mufflers!
Sid Snomann: You look a little like Casper the Friendly ghost! Any relation? I think I’ve seen you here once recently.
Digital: Of course, being a woman, I have a great ABBA CD that you can borrow anytime! At work, we had a gal who played it every morning while we were setting up the displays.
JFri: Here I was, posting away on page one, and suddenly I notced there was a page two! It was you. Please disregard my post to you then. LOL
who mantioned the Duster? My Dad ahd one of these, a reddish brown one. I thought they were neat, but then, the only thing I know about cars is that they come in different colours. lol
hey doc you still there?Marg good vibes coming your way. also i did do what you and Akenta said. felt good also. lol going check what i missed last night. bbs
Okay. Already I see I’m not reading my posts closely enough. I hearby disown any typos I you from here on in. They are nerfarious attemps of the spelling Trolls to smear my reputation as an English major!
Shika, it was me that had the Duster. It was a dependable car until I had a sneezing attack that had me crashing into a parked car and careening down a bank onto someone’s lawn. My destroyed the windshield and the other car destroyed the whole front end.
BTW: Rob Harrell–I’m glad you have kept your humour going in Adam at Home. I think my first post on GoComics was a complaint about your drawing, but someone told me to give you a chance,as you were new to AAH. Then they told me to check out BT, which our paper has never carried before.
I’m forever greatful to whoever tole me to visit BT, you saved my life (well not quite, but you guys came at a good time for me.)
RRAmom, my dad was the eldest in a farm family so he learned to drive by the time he was ten (started much earlier in the field to get hay in), and got his license at 12 or 14. He remembers the early combines that took two to drive, so he and his next-in-line brother drove, but Dan would get to daydreaming and start going astray, so dad would bang on the toolbox to get his attention to make the steering correction…
I, on the other hand, didn’t get it until I was 18 or 19–just didn’t care enough to do it earlier. I’m a lot better now, but still not the best driver…but don’t have accidents.
Not a learning to drive story, but still funny (if only to me!):
I learned to drive in Chicago, and still can when needed. It just takes a more aggressive and alert mindset than in the country. Anyway, 12 years ago I drove down to Chicago for a class reunion, and ended up driving through the city on a Friday morning. With Dakota plates.
The other drivers saw the plates and gave me room. Lots of room. About 3 or 4 times what anyone else got.. Oh, when a busy road emptied into the Kennedy/ Eisenhower/ Dan Ryan, they’d use the space, but then would gradually drift away and give me room again. Happened 5 or 6 times on the way through the city, and I got to laughing every time.
By the way, about the Chicago Interstates: I recognize Kennedy and Eisenhower as presidents and Stevenson as a big Senator and presidential candidate. So who in the heck was this Daniel Ryan???
Oh, and Cleokaya and Doctortoon, years ago in Chicago there was a terrible accident in which a bus rode over a car full of 4 or 5 teens, and the media was all blaming the bus driver. Until it came out that they were going coming to an intersection when the car pulled right in front of the bus and stopped short to make a left turn. The driver simply could not stop that quickly, and had been a twenty-plus year veteran driver without an accident on his record.
By the way, doctortoon, is it fond memories of the back seat, or _in_ the back seat?
Schikamoo, English majors and typos (or is it spellling?) are like math majors and counting/doing calculations. A math prof once told me: There are three kinds of mathematicians, those who can count and those who can’t. :-)
I’ve made my morning lap around gocomics, and I’ve made some banana muffins for breakfast, brunch, whatever…
My husband is jealous that I was allowed to drive long before he was, but he’s probably beat me in terms of miles driven by a long shot. He LIKES to drive - I like the independence (being in control of my schedule) driving gives me. We bought a used 5th wheel last fall in Denver on ebay. He borrowed his boss’s truck, and then we drove it home. I was a bit nervous, but he’s driven with trailers enough, that it wasn’t his driving that bothered me, it was helping with the navigating, making sure there was enough room for him to change lanes, stop, etc. I don’t think I’ll probably ever drive when pulling the trailer, unless it is out on the highway and not in town.
I always get a kick out of Baldo wanting a 64 Chevy Impala, because that was my first car. No one considered it a cool car back then - in fact, my friends were embarrassed to ride in it.
After it blew a head gasket, I had a 67 Chevy II (Nova) which my brother totalled. My favorite car was my 3rd one - a 1965 Ford Mustang with a 351 Cleveland. I had guys drooling and begging to buy that from me. Unfortunately, my mom totalled that one. Needless to say, I started to be much more selective about who was allowed to drive my cars after that! (I didn’t have much choice on those two, as my names weren’t on the titles because I was under 18 when they were purchased, and so it was up to my parents.)
Rmom i think i would have cried and not talkin to them for years if they messed up my Mustang. My mom drives crazy and has messed up so many cars that she is not allowed to drive mine. the only one to drive it is ME. im 19 it is mine all mine. lol
bmonk - Just the thought of driving in Chicago is a bit much for me. Oh, straight through on a highway in any city is okay, but driving around is nerve racking. My husband on the other hand, is fearless when it comes to driving. Chicago, NYC, etc. - no problem! He was a bit surprised that when he bought a car on ebay in CT, I volunteered to fly to there, so I could drive it back for us. He had just switched jobs, and so it would be harder for him to get away. I took my laptop with me, which has StreetAtlas software, hooked up the GPS, and did just fine. Three months later, I flew to NC for another ebay car purchased, and drove it back. It was kind of fun going by myself. Never would have done it though, if it wasn’t for the GPS and cell phone. I’d call my hubby, tell him which town to find me a hotel room for that night, and he’d make the reservation on-line for me. I could eat where I wanted, stop as often (and where) I wanted, didn’t have to keep the kids under control, so it was quite a change for me.
Doc you just do the rules so much better then any of us. lol i think you enjoy it also. :D i figured out a while back that Joy is not the one we need to worry about. She can take care of herself. But that Pirate, we may have to worry about him, hanging out with Joy. Shes going to make him feel old. lol
tabby - I probably would have been more upset at my mom, except she was so shook up by the wreck, she couldn’t even remember her own birthdate when we reported it to the police. I knew she was really sorry about it, and the brakes failed, so it wasn’t really her driving. (Although, she was so rattled, she didn’t think about using the emergency brake.)
Rmom, wow that is not good. was she okay? my dad had a truck that the breaks went out, well some one cut the breaks (he had a lot of enemies) and he ran into a tree (i think) and messed up the truck. i think he broke his leg idk i was not even thought of then.

Hey Bmonk: you didn’t miss anything but me falling out of the trailer and messing up both of my ankles. which resulted to me being on crutches and having splints. :D its not as bad as it sounds.. okay maybe it is.
Welcome forever. You may have noticed that some of us use nicknames around here. No disrespect intended so please feel free to ask us to stop if you’d like.
It’s Raining Men - The Weather Girls
Honey, Honey - ABBA (deal with it folks…I like them too ŏ)
Ticket to Ride (for RRAmom) - The Carpenters
Thanks dcguys - I love the Carpenters music! I used to have several of their records. Sold them at a garage sale, but if I ever get around to getting a MP3 player, I’d put some of their songs on it.
Hey everyone,
Posts from me are going to be limited from now on, I finally got a summer job, and will be getting plenty of hours.
It makes me jealous to hear about all the cool(ish) first cars you all have had. My first car was a 1990 Ford Probe that has more trunk space than people space, and the muffler rusted off when I was driving out of my high school, it was kinda embarrassing.
Speaking about learning to drive: I waited until I was 21 to learn, I’m a bad daydreamer, and I was concerned about not paying attention. I went out and bought a Chevy Nova, ($2,000 back then) then contacted a high school gym teacher who taught me how to drive for $10 dollars a lesson, cash. We never worked on parallel parking, and they didn’t ask me to do it on the driver’s test, so to this day, I don’t know how to parallel park, and I drove a truck for FedEx for 18 years! FedEx made me a good driver, I learned lots of things that I wouldn’t have learned on my own.
marg - I always thought it seemed like they stuck mine in a bench vise, and kept cranking the screw! Of course, while making me stand on my tiptoes.
tabby - my mom was physically fine - she rear-ended another car, and the front part of my Mustang took the impact. Thankfully, she was only going 30-40mph.
johnny - my 64 Impala was NOT cool looking at the time. It was bright kelly green. I went around a flat curve on a gravel road not too long after I got it, and creamed the back passenger door on a barbed wire fence. I just used the other 3 doors., and duct-taped around that smashed-in door (didn’t break the glass.)
Hey, little daughter, things went well, now I just wait for the results.
RRA: Things have improved a bit, but not as much as we’d like. There’s a poster on the bulletin board now that that shows a man in a hospital gown, and the caption says:
Tests have shown that naked people experience a 68% hearing loss.
I learned to drive on stick so when I went to driver’s ed at school I was a leg up on almost the entire class. We had the simulator and there was a lesson called “Shift For Yourself”. There was a clutch pedal that was used in the simulator and you got 2 tries to pass a lesson. I aced it the first time so I decided to goof off the second time. I was speed shifting and running red lights and then they had a scene where a lady steps out in front of you…..OOOOOPS. Every single alarm & warning light on the console went off. The instructor dismissed everybody but me and said if I EVER did anything like that again I would fail the class!
tabby, tabby - if it was dislocated, they would have popped it back in place at the hospital. (I dislocated a finger once, so I’m speaking from experience.) If you can keep them elevated - like sit in a recliner with your footrest up, it will help. Since you’re using a laptop, if you’ve got wireless, all you would have to do is run on battery, or find a place to plug in your power cord.
marg - Maybe it would help if I saw that cartoon, but I’m just not getting the one about naked & hearing loss. He who laughs last, thinks slowest. I guess my problem is my brain is fried from working Algebra problems.
its not the popped out thing its the… when you sit one way like with you knees straight bc you have your feet up for a long time, and you take your feet down and your knees pop. thats the kind of pop i wanted.
tabby if your ankles are sore you DO NOT want that kind of pop! I dislocated my right shoulder twice and trust me when I tell you it sounds way better than it actually feels!!
hey Akenta. the worse i did was put clothes washing that were already in the washer and sit on the floor and play with block with my neighbors grandson. :D just sent you something.
oh i also picked at my scap on my knee, took out supper for them to cook, put clothes in dryer. oh and read about 10 chapters. and talked on the phone. that about sums up my day. very exciting.
also i forgot i made me toast for beakfast and rice for my gravy for lunch so i would not be reported for not eatting today. :)
RRAmom, you should have seen my car.
Tabby, what did end up happening with your ankle? I must’ve missed something.
Marg, hope it all works out for you.
Jdoc (should i still call you that with our little joker Akenta on the lose?lol) they are both severely sprained. check out sundays bt i think pg 1 or 2 for the full run down. its worth it.
yea your telling me. the hospitals suck. i was there for hours and then they dont think its broken. my poor neighbor goes to the hospital the same day and they send her home bc they dont know what is wrong. she still feels like crud. i talked to her mom bc she wouldn’t tell me bc she doesnt want me to worry. the doc around here are stupid.
okay. i was just joking with both of you. she is crazy. one of my many “moms” on here. i just wanted to make sure you were still okay with me shortening your name.
tabby- all I meant was that it doesn’t seem to bother Cleo to walk around naked, so it wouldn’t keep him from hearing as much as someone with more modesty.
(Anybody wonder what Cleo will have to say with us all talking about him?)
tabbyWhere’d you go? O there you are. I keep missing you. Heh, heh.
My first car was a 70 Impala. My dad was a traveling salesman (no jokes people) and he sold it to me for $300 w/105,000 miles on it. Drove it for five years before I had to replace it. The best thing about it was I was the chauffeur for most of my friends since I had the biggest car and it had four doors. Very seldom paid for gas with all that carpooling.
JFri - I’m with you on the offensive driving. There are times it’s the only way to get where you’re going around here.
marg - Prayers from here for you as well.
RRAmom - Ditto above…and…
Close to YouSuperstarAll You Get from Love is a Love SongSing, Sing a Song (I think that’s the title.)

Doc this is your wake up call. dont know what time it is there but it is 6:23 here so close enough up and at em. up up up now now now.
I’ve never owned a car, so I can’t share first car stories. My first memory of my dad’s car was a royal blue Chrysler Plymouth. He always bought Chrysler to my knowledge. Except I’m not sure what make the Duster was. after the Duster, which was reddish brown, he got a sage green Aries and then his first automatic (after I learned how to drive) an Ivory Aries. after he died, mom drove that car until my nephew crashed it when he borrowed it during a snowstorm. She never got another car.
shika I pretend to exercise since if I did a workout that was really beneficially, I wouldn’t have time to chat and play games. I’m just starting real slowly. Maybe next year, I’ll get more serious.
tabby it’s only 5:30 in CO - let drT sleep a little longer.
You gals have been talking about my proclivity to be naked. Well it has it’s bennies. The young lady who worked at the RV dealership asked where I had been to get such an early tan. I told her I hadn’t gone anywhere, that I don’t get cold so I wear less earlier than anyone else.
Shikamoo my memory isn’t that great either - I just make notes on a piece of scratch paper as I read the posts, so I can remember what I want to say to whom.
While I’m waiting for someone to come back, this is one car story, more of a road story.
Since I don’t own a car, I only drove my mom’s car after dad died. I’d drive her around for short road trips when I was on vacation. (We live over 100 miles apart.) Anyways, that changed when I got my cat Mua about ten years ago. How to go on vacation. Simple: rent a car and drive him up to my mom’s. That’s right. Rent a car for the cat.
So, since I’d never driven on a four lane hwy before, not since my driving lesson anyways (20 years prior), I drove straight up Yonge Street, which in Ontario starts at Lake Ontario and goes past Thunderbay. It’s the world’s longest street at several hundred miles, only two lanes and stop lights most of the way (everytime it went throug a town.) I got lost in Barrie, drove around a while, then took a wrong turn and drove partway on the wrong hwy before turning around and FINALLY arrived at my mom’s It took me two hours longer than the hwy.
tabby - When I got old enough to develop AAADD, I started relying less on my memory, and more on my notes. The only problem is to find my notes when I need them!
RRAmom: That should read ” an ivory Aries.” Aries is the make, ivory was the colour! But you knew that, didn’t you? I sometimes make notes, but I get tired. too much note taking since September.
Shikamoo I can’t think of an “Aries” make either. Is that spelled correctly? My notes are VERY short - name, and one or two words - there is no way I’d be able to decipher them after they’re “cold”.
Shika, the last time I was in Thunder Bay was about 6 years ago working as a travel writer and photographer. I listened to CBC Radio the entire drive across Canada. As I neared Thunder Bay they were doing a show from Hoito’s restaraunt and since I am part Finnish, I had to stop. The whole town smelled of cabbage.
Has anyone mentioned “Send in the Clowns?”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aj4iqGQrK8s&feature=related
I’ve been lurking for a while but had to chime in when someone mentioned their first car. Mine was a 1950 Morris Minor that had to be cranked to start!
Yes, I am that old - and female.
It was a great way to attract the guys at University.
They had never seen anything like it.
I know the rules - play nice - no religion or politics ;-)
Welcome DawnAvril! ( yeah, I know I have dishes to do, but there’s only my cat I me, so who’s to notice?)
I haven’t heard someone talk of a Morris Minor since my Gramma died (in 1968). Hers was a blue MM that had to be cranked and I loved that little car. She was married though, so I doubt she used it to get guys. Although now that I think of it, I think hers was what they called a Mini Minor, or is that my memory playing tricks? Was there a Mini Moinor? Must be Morris.
JFri- You’re right. I didn’t call it a Dodge Aries because I didn’t think it mattered. Not to show my ignorance, but it hard not to- I mentioned I though my Dad bought only Chrysler. Is Dodge Chrysler?
RRAmom: Lots of makes I’ve never heard of. You know more than I do.
Thanks JFri! I thought Aries sounded familiar, but just didn’t sound right as a make - as a model, yes. My hubby is much better than I with knowing makes & models.
Shikamoo, it used to be more important to have two tabs, since posting your comment flipped you back to page one. I got used to it, and still tend to do it even when it’s not necessary. Two open tabs does help keeping your place in the comments while you cut and past (and edit) or otherwise enter a comment in the second. You flip between the two on the tab toolbar.
Bmonk. lol it took me a second to get what you were saying.. please tell me your not tessing me like other sites. :D i ment to right wa la like ta da. i have to go back and see it now.
Tabby, I was just teasing, of course. I think I’ve seen it spelled “voila” or something like that. My spelling, even of native English words, is sometimes rather spotty.
tabby, I don’t use caps lock much, except when I mistype an “A”. OTOH, I tend to type so fast, often the first two letters get capped. So I get the same, and have to go back and correct it. Some people call me pedantic, others accuse me of having OCD.
ANother advantage of multiple tabs: when following several comics, I let the others load while reading the first. THen I make the rounds. Works best for Pibgorn and Big Top, with their 50 comment pages and multiple pages…
(Tabby, see what I was saying about double caps? HE he he.)
Jfri feed me!! no one is home to cook for me, seeing as i still cant get up and cook. if i do it will raise 50 kinds of h e l l so im being good and not going it. :D
Bmonk, i cant take much “pulling of the legs” right now. Two reasons. one other sites (see last night last page) and then two my legs are in bad condition. :D
Yeh, it’s a problem I have: too much joshing at times. But I only do it with those I care about, so I hope you don’t take it to heart in a negative way. You got too much going for you. Just remember how much we all care about you and miss you. Heck, they’d even prolly send out the helicopters and pirate ships if you vanished….
JFri: I’m glad Tabby identified your avatar. I thought it was a cat, but couldn’t figure out what it’s legs were doing. so I clicked on it to see it larger. Is it Dalmatian? ( a small one ie puppy?)
Oops, gotta go soon to pray. We’re on retreat all this week. Prayers for all yu’all, and especially for Tabbylynn’s recovery so’s she can get back on her feet. Literally.
Bmonk. thanks i was feeling a little down for a min there. feeling better now. we need to send them out for DRY and JOY they are having a party without us. thanks for the prayers.
shika it was bugging me i couldn’t remember if i asked or not.
JFRI: Did you get the dog at Best Friends in Utah?
Thanks to ALL for your good thoughts. :-)
I come and go a lot from this site, and I can’t always keep up with all the correspondence. That’s why I stopped hanging out at Pibgorn, I just didn’t have the time to keep up with everything. So, if I don’t see something that you’ve said or asked, I apologize.
Someone mentioned earlier driving through Detroit with Dakota liscence plates and they gave him/her lots of room on the hwy. what gives? What’s the connection?
Shika, he is an English Pointer. In that pic he is a puppy on his back.. I called him pretzle pup! marg, I got him through Four Paws Rescue in Logan, UT. Drove 1500 miles in the snow (off & on)in February on a weekend to get him!

Yeah, Margueritem, I was up in Payson, which isn’t too far from your fair city. Shikamoo, we were talking earlier about learning to drive, and I said it wasn’t that exactly, but still funny. And I kinda have a generic prayer for all my friends, but it’s still good to have specific names and needs. Like Owlsly’s wife, and Uncalby’s wife (and him) or Tabbylynn, or …
Nice thing about prayer: it’s infinitely expandable. Like an infinite hotel; you can still have room for an infinite number of new guests.
Yes, RRAmom, that’s what I figured the other Chicago drivers were thinking: “Let’s give this Dakota guy lots of room in case he doesn’t know how to drive.” But that’s where I learned, and it comes back fast, like falling off a bicycle.
I think it was on Sunday that I just happened to look out my daughter’s bedroom window and I saw 2 ducks. One was on top of the other and I first thought they were getting “busy”, but then I realized that the one on top was beating the feathers out of the one on the bottom.
I went to the sliding door so I could go out and stop the fight, but by the time I got to the door, the fight had stopped and they had both gone in different directions.
cleo, I work a regular work week & anytime else I’m needed. I worked last evening servicing & calibrating 2 gas monitors they needed first thing this AM. This was after my long weekend & a 4 hour drive home!
This afternoon, one of my daughters told me that there was something strange outside the window in the backyard. i went out to get a closer look and it was a dead duck. There were feathers scattered all about.
I not quite sure if these things are ducks. They are really big, about the size of a swan. One (the dead one) is white with a yellow (goldish) mouth (beak?) and yellow feet. The killer (?) is black with some white markings. It has a red mouth (beak?) and red webbed feet.
JFri, if it is still out there tomorrow morning I will try to get a photo.
I think I have seen other black ducks with the red bills and webbed feet in other areas. I think I saw 2 or 3 of them before on the side of the road. They were hopping in the street trying to get at some road kill. These ducks are ugly. they look like freaks of nature.
Cleo, Yes, we live on Vancouver Island. Love it here! I’ve read some of your posts about your lake and weather. We have much the same situation only a river rather than a lake. What we have always wanted! walks and bike rides every day and deer eating the new plants - even the cedars.
JFri,
When we saw the dead one, the killer was not around. I don’t know if the killer was chowing down on the dead one. The dead one appeared to be roughed up, it had a big spot where several feathers were missing. there was no blood or guts.

SHIKAMOO, CLEO, DCGUYS and anyone else… Sounds like we all have some interesting learning to drive stories. But I’m thankful we live out here in the country, so that my sons have been able to improve their driving skills where there is less traffic before getting into city traffic.
cleokaya over 15 years ago
Yup, the stress level of learning to drive in the country sure eases the process. I bought my wife’s brothers motor home from him 4 years ago. I had never driven anything that long before and he lives in Fullerton, CA. So my first experience behind the wheel was on the streets and freeways of Los Angeles.

(I didn’t have much choice on those two, as my names weren’t on the titles because I was under 18 when they were purchased, and so it was up to my parents.)
tabbylynn over 15 years ago

Shikamoo Premium Member over 15 years ago
RRAmom: That should read ” an ivory Aries.” Aries is the make, ivory was the colour! But you knew that, didn’t you? I sometimes make notes, but I get tired. too much note taking since September.

Smiley Rmom over 15 years ago
Shikamoo I can’t think of an “Aries” make either. Is that spelled correctly? My notes are VERY short - name, and one or two words - there is no way I’d be able to decipher them after they’re “cold”.

Mine was a 1950 Morris Minor that had to be cranked to start! Yes, I am that old - and female. It was a great way to attract the guys at University. They had never seen anything like it. I know the rules - play nice - no religion or politics ;-)

Shikamoo, it used to be more important to have two tabs, since posting your comment flipped you back to page one. I got used to it, and still tend to do it even when it’s not necessary. Two open tabs does help keeping your place in the comments while you cut and past (and edit) or otherwise enter a comment in the second. You flip between the two on the tab toolbar.

It’s what we used to say about the Saskatchewan farmers. There, the roads are so straight that we thought they never learned how to turn corners.

Hi, Dawn. Are you Canadian?
cleokaya over 15 years ago
So JFri, do you have some time off or are you working? You seem to have a very eclectic schedule.

Hi Cleo and JFri, Do you all know anything about ducks? I had a duck homicide in my backyard.
DawnAvril over 15 years ago
JFri, Yes I am Canadian - retired on the west coast now after living in Calgary most of my life. What a change from the cold!

Duck homicide! I am always trying to duck a homicide. But no…Have you got ducks offing one another?

Dawn - are you living in BC? I live down in Bellingham, WA and used to live in Vancouver.

Carmy sounds like 2 drakes fighting over a hen. I majored in biology to be a wildlife biologist so that is my best guess based on your description.

JFri, you are a busy man. Glad you have some time to be with us tooners.

Can you e-mail me a pic of the dead one? Doesn’t fit my theory now. Let me think about this some more.

cleo I do a lot on this site from my Blackberry….like right now!

What we have always wanted! walks and bike rides every day and deer eating the new plants - even the cedars.
cleokaya over 15 years ago
Sorry carmy. Maybe JFri can be of help. I am not .

Carmy, now you’re talking about vultures! Are you sure the swan was alive or was it just eating it after it was dead? Look up turkey vulture online.

BMONK: I like very much what you wrote about prayer. Carmy has an expandable prayer list, too.

JFri, When we saw the dead one, the killer was not around. I don’t know if the killer was chowing down on the dead one. The dead one appeared to be roughed up, it had a big spot where several feathers were missing. there was no blood or guts.
