At the point where you distort, invert, flip, draw lines through, and rotate letters sufficiently to confuse any robot you have also managed to confuse any human. But a lot of them are click bait and want you to keep guessing as they garner more income from presenting new ads to you.
I saw an interesting article about how Google and others use those things to help decipher bad scans. When they have scanned old books, documents, etc. and have sections their own machines and AI can’t read, they present the images to millions of people in captchas and use the most frequent replies as the likely correct reading.

Occasionally I get one that I can’t discern what one of the characters is allegedly representing.

I sympathize with this one….I don’t know how many times I stare at the characters, they rarely look like the alphabet.
