I can remember when I was forced to move back in with my parents for a brief time. I was in my late twenties, divorced, and looking for a suitable apartment. I hadn’t really lived at home since I’d gone away to school as a teenager. It was a difficult adjustment for all of us!
My schedule exacerbated the situation because I often had to work at different times – day and night – and often didn’t come rolling in until the early hours of the morning.
One morning, when I came in, just as my father was headed off to his job, he asked, " Are you just coming in or going out? " … To which I replied, " Which one do you want me to do? " … He said nothing but just gave me a certain look.
Three days later, I found the perfect apartment and moved into it.
My daughter just recently moved back into town with a new job. She stayed with us for a few weeks while she was looking for a place. It didn’t bother us, but you could tell it was driving her crazy. She’s very independent.
Fifty years ago after I got my first job I paid my parents $75 a month for room and board. Not long after I found an apartment and never went back. My sister went back when she was 40 and stayed for years.
After my divorce the house sold before I could find a suitable new place. My parents had previously made the offer that they could accommodate me, if need be. It was only for a couple weeks, but it still felt rather odd.
